What Manjaro has done for me

I am an old man, 81, to be precise, and Manjaro is the only, so far, distro that has my computer purring like a kitten.
I only play a few simple games, gweled, pysolfc, peg-e, to name a few, but I have to say, I just came over from Linux MInt 22.1 and pysolfc comes up so much faster it was a shock to me. Even Firefox performs better and scrolling, probably no directely related to Manjaro, is so much smoother.
The overall performance is fantastic.
This is coming from an old geezer who goes back to the Honeywell Bull Punch, Datamation card readers, Bournes card readers, Data Products line printers and even some RJE systems.
Boy, those were the days and I am glad they are gone.
I worked on KSR33 teletypes.
Any way, just came here to extoll the virtues of Manjaro. Keep up the great work.

Haha it’s nice to hear.

I have to agree that I’ve mostly just enjoyed the improvements gradually coming in over the years since abandoning internet shops and picking up my own core2duo desktop - I came in from Gnome2 (Ubuntu) followed by Linux Mint, and I also found Manjaro to be a fair bit smoother - but also with so much more simple access to updated software.

For sure, Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be

I do hope when I turn 81 which does not seem that far away now as I am 65 I will be able to still get on a computer so respect goes out to you for that.As far as Linux systems go I have been using Linux for about 20 years.I have been using Manjaro since about 2019 and can not think of anything to really complain about.Any issues are usually solved very fast and the people on the forum here are very good at helping.

I totally agree with you. Hang in there and thank you for the respect given,

Haha yes, I really liked the brown/orange colour scheme… I jumped on with Gutsy Gibbon, 3 months before Hardy Heron - remember people saying ‘brown is not a pretty colour’ but I think it’s a comfortable colour and the contrasts were good for a light theme (unlike the more modern whiter than white light themes).

Intrepid Ibex was my last, that’s when I jumped on Mint - when they took away my Gnome2 desktop.

@herbie

Thank you for your contribution. My experiences are the same.

I switched from Mint to Manjaro about 5 years ago with all the computers in my household and have been very satisfied ever since. Hardly ever had any problems, and then only minor ones, unlike the supposedly stable Mint, which caused more and more problems after updates. But that in turn has also helped me to understand Linux better and to learn more.

Reading here and in other forums has helped me a lot to help myself. I am still learning a lot. As a pensioner I naturally have more time to learn, even if it’s not as fast as when I was younger. In the meantime, I can also give a little help back from time to time. Unfortunately I don’t speak English, but translators can help.

I am very happy about the many helpful people in the forums, without whom none of this would be possible. I would also like to thank everyone who contributes to the distributions.

Many thanks

Gnome 3 was a disaster, at least. to me anyway. BTW, the brown was fine, easy on the eyes. Now it seems all GTK is bright white.
I switch to unstable branch so I can downgrade gnome-system-monitor to accept my custom theming, but I digress. lol.
Have a great day everyone.

Glad to hear your experience was great!
For me after trying a few distros this rocking one got the looks, the works and most of all a beautiful support forum full of enthusiastic people helping pretty fast and pretty accurate. From the bottom of my heart, thanks!

I will be 78 in a few weeks, and like you I came from Linux Mint. I had to stop using it bc it dropped KDE. I could not believe it. I was then on Kubuntu for a while, sort of morphing Mint KDE into Kubuntu. I found scripts to do that. Not too bad. But then I heard about Manjaro rolling release. Ah ha! Best thing I ever did. I am running a venerable core2duo laptop with a 2.5ghz processor and a NVIDIA graphics card. Lately there have been video challenges, but I figured out how to enable the NVK open source drivers greatly improving screen performance. Recently the fan has gotten a little noisy, and a new fan is on the way. The computer runs so well I am happy to keep it, as long as maintenance does not involve anything too major.

“What have the Romans ever done for us?”
With a thread title of What Manjaro has done for me I could not help but be reminded of the Monty Python sketch from the Life of Brian.

I too am old enough to have been around before the film was made, when 0.25MB (or was that KB?) of memory was a lot, disk drives did not include the disk and personal computers were yet to be developed.

a few years later… I have been a user of other fine Linux distros. I’ve worked my way through Suse, Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Sabayon, the later because it was rolling release, which led me to Manjaro, which suits my needs and preferences and I have used for the most years. Thanks team.

Hello Manjaro Community,

I’m Lal T V, an intermediate Linux enthusiast with over 12 years of experience exploring various distros like Ubuntu, Fedora, and more. While I initially struggled to adopt Linux as my daily driver due to certain limitations, my retirement a year ago reignited my passion for Linux. I was amazed by how polished, beautiful, and powerful modern distros have become, now packed with all the apps I need.

Over the past three months, I’ve tested more than 20 mainstream distros. Among them, Garuda KDE Dragonized and Manjaro KDE stood out as my favorites. After extensive testing, I chose Manjaro KDE for its perfect balance of performance, features, and aesthetics. I’ve even customized it to mimic Garuda’s look, and I’m thrilled with how seamlessly everything works, including the ChatAI widget, which I use extensively.

Recently, I switched to the testing branch and was pleasantly surprised by its stability. I’ve installed the PIKA backup application, and my root partition is formatted with Btrfs, with snapshots available in the Grub menu, which gives me peace of mind.

I joined this forum to connect, learn, and share experiences with this incredible community. Thank you all for creating such a welcoming and supportive space!
