Weird issue on boot

having a weird issue on boot.
I select the first ( default ) option on grub I get this

after a few seconds, it reboots.

if I select the fallback, it blinks once and goes to the login screen just fine.

what can I do to fix this?

probably unrelated, but when I use the laptop ( I use i3 and I also installed gnome ) the UI does freeze occasionally for a few seconds. Very randomly. Not sure how to debug.

it’s a new Dell XPS laptop

did a pacman -Syyu yesterday and I think it got a new kernel version.
So today, it boots up fine.
I guess it re-wrote the grub part or something.
