Weird graphical artifacts while using desktop as normal

Hello, I’ve recently (very recent) have been getting these weird artifacting after doing one of these little things 2 update my stuff. vvv

And after restarting my PC, For some reason I’ve started getting strange artifacting, which commonly occurs on both displays I have but mostly happens on my 2nd display, (Huion display tablet), and I’ve been stumped on why it’s happening? I checked my GPU, re-enabled my integrated graphics, and have rebooted many times.

The artifacting looks a bit like the image below, (something I quickly did to show a friend of mine what was happening).

I mean, the only thing “Overclocking” (i think) i’ve done was enable expo in bios, and that was when I first had built my pc, thats about it..
The thing too this screen artifacting wasn’t occurring at all like days prior to today, which what confuses me

Exactly. You’re running DDR5 4800MHz with 6000Mhz and you’re wondering about screen artifacts :man_shrugging:

There is nothing confusing about it. The next day you say my computer was working all along and all of a sudden its gone. I don’t know what RAM kit you have or how capable the cpu’s memory controller is and also notice that RAM itself has no cooling system or temperature sensors of its own. The point is given your system there won’t be any benefit of overclocking the RAM. If you want to get rid of the artifacts simply turn off the EXPO in the BIOS and run the system inside its specifications.

I am no expert on this but the RAM overclocking looks scary - to my knowledge - overclocking is by far the best way of killing your hardware.

Your monitor layout seems to be stretched as well.

Two different DPI and one of the monitors appear to be running at 200hz while the smaller one is stretched to 2520px vertically - the d-rect: 4480x2520 display-ID: 0.

I must be misreading the output somehow because in my mind there is something that doesn’t add up…?

The one screenshot shows less artifacts. Since the RAM was running overclocked i think you should run a memory test to ensure it still works properly.

I’m not even sure how to reply to this… I don’t know how that would happen cause I only ever tweak my display settings with the system settings

I dont think its ram, i have the same problem on my laptop, only on linux. No matter the distro, on manjaro its less severe than kubuntu but still present

If I were in your situation I would consider testing a newer kernel.

The reason is the improvements which has been made to the 7.x series regarding AMD.

I saw a noticeable improvement on a Thinkpad T495 AMD when switching from 6.18 to 7.x - of course I cannot promise anything - you are in the position to test it.

Just seeing artifacts doesn’t make it the same problem. There are different causes.

Ok, so there are other possibilities. Your monitor has a very high refresh rate. Perhaps it is related to this. So one easy thing is to try the 7.1 kernel as @linux-aarhus proposes. Then you could put the GPU to work - for instance install glmark2 and run it - do the artifacts still happen when the GPU is on high load? If not it can be related to dynamic power management. Another reason could be VRR (or FreeSync) together with the 200hz refresh rate. To find the reason first you could turn off VRR if you use it or you could lower the monitor’s refresh rate to 60hz. Without knowing the real reason it will be hard to find a proper fix.

You re-enabled it, but have you also ensured it is used? Vulkan (And maybe also other graphics APIs?) tends to act smart, and it will use whichever GPU has the most video RAM, it assumes this GPU to be the most powerful one.

So even if you re-enable the I-GPU and plug your monitor in to the mainboard, it may still use the discrete card for the actual compute.

You could try either fully remove your discrete GPU, or forcing the I-GPU to be used via Switcheroo (Install it, enable the systemd service, and run a program by right clicking it and selecting integrated graphics). Physically removing the discrete card would be the most reliable method. Then validate if this issue also appears when only running on the integrated graphics, it likely will not.

EXPO/XMP is by definition overclocking, but are predefined settings tested and validated by the RAM manufacturer. If such an option is available to you, you should have it enabled. Not enabling it makes you miss out on a significant amount of performance, especially in modern systems and on I-GPUs, the speed of the system RAM is the primary bottleneck in most common workloads.

This is very unlikely to be the cause of the artifacts. If the RAM was running unstable the user would have experienced system instability, such as crashes or boot failure. It is typical for unstable DDR5 to not even make it past memory training during POST.

My suspicion would be a defective discrete GPU, although it is possible this might be a driver issue.

Given that the artifacts appear to always occur at the same part of the screen, I’m inclined to agree. Possibly defective VRAM.

The boost in MT/s in its EXPO/XMP profile is really impressive, though. That’s certainly possible if the RAM is certified by the manufacturer for that, but it does sound a bit unusual.

I also have 4800 MT/s RAM, and my EXPO boosts it to a reasonable 5200 MT/s, which is absolutely enough for me.

Well options need to be checked - the CPU specs say max is 5200Mhz for two slots (for more it goes down to 3600Mhz). The option to overclock comes without warranty. To cut it short, if you don’t know what you’re doing, you should leave it alone. (The performance gain of RAM overclocking when running a discrete GPU with its own VRAM isn’t significant in general.)

That is the maximum the CPU manufacturer guarantees to be stable under normal usage during the warranty period of the CPU, however I have only ever seen this be (close to) the actual limit on Ryzen 5000 and before, back when the memory clock speed also affected the Infinity Fabric clock speed. That it is officially supported does not mean you shouldn’t nor that it is not recommended.

XMP and EXPO profiles do tend to be very safe and conservative, you can push the overclocks way beyond what they typically offer if you really wanted to. I do not recommend OCing beside XMP/EXPO and PBO, even at stock modern CPUs will degrade very quickly and often start showing issues after just a few years of heavy usage, such as it no longer being able to maintain high memory clocks.

The performance benefits will highly depend on the exact workload, it can highly differ, I have encountered people on forums who had performance issues in games on good hardware, such as lag and stutter, which was resolved by enabling a RAM overclock. So I always recommend enabling it, and if it proves to be unstable, you should still enable it and combine it with lower clock speeds until stable. The only real downsides are potential instability (very rarely, depending on hardware configuration), yet you get essentially free performance for it in return.
