Stuck at login prompt

Hello. I’m stuck at the Xfce login prompt (I enter my password, the screen goes black for a moment, then it’s back to the login screen). I think my installing qemu might have caused this; afterwards I couldn’t boot into Manjaro or Windows.

I tried using a terminal at login (Ctrl Alt F2) to no result. Any ideas or suggestions welcome.

Do you have /etc/X11/xorg.d/20-Intel or some variant. I had the same issue and resolved it by deleting said file.
YMMV

Any idea why it worked?

I had the same issue using i3wm with lightdm. Deleting or moving that file made the login work again. But it messed up my screen settings (e.g., wallpaper resolution, dual monitor settings). So I would be interested in why it worked, too. And if you have (or anybody has) an idea how to handle screen configurations when the 20-intel file is not at that path anymore. Thanks. z0id

Fix: It turned out to be a known lightdm issue (“Infinite Login Loop”) in my case. According to the ArchWiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/LightDM#Troubleshooting), running

rm ~/.Xauthority

solved the problem.

But I assume LightDM isn’t part of Xfce.

It’s not exactly “part of it” - as it is just a display manager.
But it is the display manager that comes pre-installed when you install Xfce.

You could use a different one - or none at all.

But that is not how the default installation is set up.

It uses lightdm. When you install Xfce4.
It uses sddm when you install Plasma/KDE
It uses gdm when you install the Gnome variant.

curious:
why did you say “but”?

I don’t know.

Just checked the logs; there are plenty of errors.
