VLC freezes entire system

I few months ago I watched this video from Chris Titus and thought to myself that I haven’t ever had any problems with VLC. The next day I tried to play something other than a MP4 file and then it happened. VLC froze my entire system and I had to reboot. Now I tried to use VLC again for MOD video files but it still freezes up. Now I’m testing out other media players.

What is the reason that VLC does this?

There exists an unresolved issue, seems to have something to do with mesa, more to read here:
