Very slow shut down

Hi Manjaro,

when I shut down my 2in1 lenovo x390, I see the manjaro logo with the three dots pulsing for a long time. Then just before power off I see watchdog: watchdog0: did not stop.

I tried “nowatchdog” on kernel boot line, but no result ….

Ideas?

Thxxxxx!

Hi @rednose,

I also have that and never thought about it until now. Please see

https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/249660

This is normal. I see 3 of them as last messages. I actually tried to disable them but i guess i missed one somewhere.

For a home machine that is not a remote unattended server they do not matter at all. So you can ignore the warnings.

Hi thx for the answers. I need to say more I guess. I “assumed” the issue is related to the watchdog, as it is the last message I see before power off. But the issue I’m trying to solve is the looooong shutdown time. I see the manjaro graphic logo with the pulsating dot for at least two minutes, then the short text line about the watchdog, then finally power off.

If I run systemd-analyze blame I’ve a line:

5min 18ms archlinux-keyring-wkd-sync.service

Does it help?

The watchdog is not the cause of it. It actually happens after the problem. By default, the timeout for unsesponsive service is 90 second, so you have something busy on shutdown that is killed after timeout. The timeout can of course be reduced, but it is better to fix the problem.
You can do 2 things.

  1. go to /etc/default/grub and edit the boot line removing “quiet” and “splash”. Save, sudo update-grub. You will now see the boot and shutdown process in realtime and see the exact service that hangs. It will be red, with moving asterisk and “a stop job is running for XXXXX” with count in seconds up to 90.
  2. maybe you can find some error message in the journal
journalctl -b -1 -r

Will reverse sort the last boot so the error might be in the first screens.

P.s. i correctect the title

Thx for the title.

I tried using the x390 as I normally do in the last couple of days (e.g. as a tablet) and tried reboot/shutdown a couple fo times. Currently setting is as suggested (e.g. noquiet and nosplash). At the moment the problem is not appearing, start up and shutdown are not stuck …

I’ll keep it as-is for now. Not as nice as the graphic manjaro logo, but hey most of the time the x390 is in suspend mode …

If I see the issue again, I’ll reply here. Thx!!! and happy new year!

Hi Manjaro,

now the problem is found: I see a message like “a stop job is running for fingerprint deamon” and a counter starting from 1min30sec

If I run the suggested jounrnalctl -b -1 -r, I see a line: “fprintd.service killing process with signal SIGKILL

Do you have a fingerprint reader to use? If you do, do you need it at login?

Hi yes there is a fingerprint on the x390. As it is used as a tablet, hence the finger sensor is “on the other side” when flipped up, I resolved to remove the fprintd package. I’ll login/unlock using the password …

Thx und Guten Rutsch!
