#26

very good point there .

i dont know exactly how amdgpu works, but should he not have any monitor/gpu configurations in /etc/X11/* ? i dont see any. also is video-linux or vesa supposed to be installed alongside amdgpu?

nice tutorial by btw, i didnt know amdgpu was installed with mhwd, i thought it required manual intervention. so in this situation it would be as simple as?
sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

IIRC this would also setup monitor configs that are missing ?

#27

that one is only aimed at old GCN 1.1 cards. Vega is GCN 5.

video-linux = opensource drivers. It’s a metapackage that installs all intel, nvidia and AMD mesa drivers and the vulkan and vaapi parts. mesa itself decides which one is loaded and:

that line tells that the correct driver is used.

Just tried with my Asus Vega64 and Ryzen 2700X on Live boot, and it works out of the box.

So we are dealing with something more troublesome here.
For me it seems that xorg or mesa don’t get the correct resolutions reported by the screen or the card. That could be a cable fault or a screen fault or some weird scenario with the drivers.

#28

It seems Vega is a difficult hardware on Linux. Several topics about troubleshooting refer to grub parameters.
Example is this, from which you can try some of them.
I think @Tids knows this stuff…

I 'm afraid it’s only a general rule, not really useful here… :sob:

video-linux includes amdgpu, though (as you advised OP) it is replaced with experimental, which I have no idea when is useful. Do you?
vesa might be tried as “replacement”, I think, not in parallel.

AFAIK there are no auto-monitor configs. If needed, they should be manually created, using real EDID and xrandr, creating/adding new resolutions.

#29

those are for APU’s on notebooks and non-default mainboards (meaning stuff like proprietary HP or Dell boards)

free drivers don’t need configs. If you add a config, Prime won’t work anymore.

#30

ok so my advice on removing video-linux = not so good :disappointed:
and should now be reinstalled with sudo mhwd -a free 0300 ?

#31

But… it’s a single GPU here…??

Would a “monitor-only” config break anything Xorg/amdgpu?

#32

Yes, that should be done @Nikolailarsen01

It should not, but it won’t solve much as the correct driver is already loaded and used.

@Nikolailarsen01
That command should list the modes the screen reports:
xrandr --props

The first line is the most interesting one, but please post the output of the whole command.

#33

A search suggests there is at least one same GPU that works fine!

only…

#36

Please try the other display port on your card or another display port cable (or maybe an HDMI cable) - your screen does not report the correct resolutions.

#37

Were you using the same connection type (DP) with nvidia, or something else?
An old report (xorg log etc) containing EDID/Modelines for the monitor might make it easier…

#38

Swapping displayports did not work. My monitor does not support HDMI.

I used the same monitor and Display cable when I had my gtx 960.

#39

the GTX 960 only used Displayport 1.2 while the Vega64 has Display Port 1.4 HDR. It might be that the cable worked ok with 1.2 but won’t work with 1.4

What is the exact name and model of your screen?
