After re-formatting some old HHD’s with Gparted and Discs, my USB ports on my ThinkPad X240 have stopped working. I ran updates after I discovered the problem. There were some old threads that suggested switching kernels so I switched from 6.15.3-1 to 6.6.94-1 but that didn’t change anything. The Flash Drive works on another (Ubuntu), machine just fine.
Can someone point me in a new direction? Please?
You should not do that as 6.9 is already EOL
Please switch to 6.12 fast.
Is your system up to date ?
When was your last full update ?
sudo inxi --filter --verbosity=8
or
sudo inxi -zv8

The results of lsusb -v
may be of help here.
Some old hard drives need an amp (or maybe more); there’s a possibility you’ve blown a poly-fuse on the mainboard.

Thanks Andrea. Okay, I switched to 6.12.34. I ran an update after I discovered the problem. I’m hoping it updates more than just the Packages but anyway, it made no difference. And switching to 612 didn’t change anything (that would have been too easy).
I know the following is supposed to be formatted somehow, but haven’t figured that part out yet so please forgive me:

I’ve added the ``` on blank lines above and below your Terminal output.
Another way to do this is to highlight the pasted output and click the </> button at the top of the reply window.
Thanks BG405
A fuse? Hope not…
Hope the following helps:

Please use proper formatting when pasting terminal output. Type three backticks (`) above and below the terminal output. It makes things much easier to read.

What?
In a minute I’ll have formatted your unformatted an unreadable output into someting you should have done.

I’ve just had a chat with a well-educated friend about these “fuses”.
What I was referring to would actually be a “poly-switch” and these self-reset after a while. It could, however, be a circuit protector (which actually is a fuse. Let’s hope not).
@kay-dee If you have anything which lights up when plugged in to a USB port, this will help to confirm if power is present or not.
Yes, BG. The SanDisc flash-drive glows, a slow steady flash. Thank you for taking the time.

Thanks for replying, sorry for the delay.
I can’t say I’d really know what to look for here, but is there any activity if you run journalctl -f
and plug a USB device in? … it may well be helpful to paste that output here.
Note: CTRL + C to quit the monitor.
I just want to be clear. Do you want me to plug in the flash-drive before or after I run the command?

Run the command first. It will spit out some output and then wait for new activity.
Then attach a USB device and see what extra lines show up, if any. It’s those we’d be interested in seeing.

So from this it seems that the OS sees the USB device correctly, as far as I can tell. I guess when you unplug it you’ll also see more output.
This means the hardware and (to a large extent) the software is working fine. Seems to me there’s an issue with the file manager if it’s not showing up there.
How about lsblk
and sudo parted -l
with the drive plugged in? This may help to confirm. Cheers!
ETA: Another potentially useful one: mount | grep '/dev/'

This suggests the USB has become corrupted. This does happen when you least expect it.
One thing I forgot to ask: do any other USB devices work if you have any?
Can you access the USB disk via e.g. GParted to re-format it?

Thanks BG. I tried running a ISO file from a flash-drive and was able to boot into the distro without issue. I’ve a mouse and an external keyboard somewhere, but I’d have to dig them out. It’s after midnight here, so if you want, I can try that in the morning.
Again thank you so much… Katie

That’d be good. One last thought, which I should have asked earlier. Is it, by any chance, formatted as NTFS?
At least this seems to confirm your ports are OK.
Cheers.
Okay, BG… Progress.
NTFS? Sorry… I really don’t remember, but…
I was able to format an old flash-drive to FAT 16, not in G-Parted, but in Discs. The drive showed up in the menu and I was able to save a document to it. I’ll check the other devices in the morning and get back to you.
Sleep well… Katie
