Upgrade trashed gimp and reinstalling it breaks libxml2 dependency

“Starbuck” was the pet name Scully’s father had for her, which was revealed sometime through The X-Files franchise.

Ah, the X-Files.

I have seen some.

The end was always: What do you think? Was it true or was it made up?
from what I remember …

Always a bit disappointing, because they never told you :man_shrugging:

as if that would have made it better or more worthwhile

The bootable image is called MANJARO_XFCEM_2003 so I assumed it was a year. However, you are right. Time stamp is 2020-06-06 and I must admit I was probably using Windows XP back then.

For me, an OS should be like the firmware in my washing machine: It does not need “updating” every time I wash my clothes!
On my desktop computer it’s the applications that I use that count and they are all working fine now, thanks.

And that way to see things would much better align with other distributions,
like: Mint or Debian (the stable branch, still “Bookworm” currently) - or Ubuntu

A rolling release (like Arch or EOS or Debian Sid …) is a different beast and requires a different approach and attitude.

I shall look in to Ubuntu as I have lots of backup SSDs formatted in ext4 format which Windows might not support.

… look at Mint instead - you’ll not be sorry (pinky swear! - I mean it. This was not sarcasm.)

It’s basically the same as Ubuntu - but better.

I’m using it right now - since 2023 not even one single problem, will keep going till 2027 without needing any intervention

The latest LTS version gives you an unchanging system that will work flawlessly as on the first day with minimal effort until 2029 - and can even be upgraded along the way if you so wish.

I’m waiting for Tesla Pi tablet, especially if I can add a second screen.
XOS may be the future. IMO Windows is finished and Linux is going the same way.

p.s. here is yputube about it

First time I heard of XOS - not watching this video with that narrator/narration.

Use your own words to describe why it (whatever it is) would be obsoleting Linux.

It could well be the perfect OS for you - the Manjaro/Arch is like … diametrically opposed to what this seems to represent.

Why you ever chose Manjaro is a mystery to me in that light. :man_shrugging:

yeah, it was a mistake. I can’t think of a single reason that I would want a “rolling distribution”. I’m retired and just want to get on with my photography hobby without paying monthly subscriptions to things like Photoshop.

… right - that’s what it looked like to me
A rolling distro is way too much work just to maintain the basis of your hobby, what you actually want to do.

Good luck and all the best!

Another vote for Mint.

As for the tesla tablet…i wonder if it will be powered by the same carOS with mega AI that rearends trucks or drivers over motorists…or maybe the other one powering the “robots” that are remotely controlled by low wage indian people.
And i wonder if tesla could manage to create an OS why are they still using android in the car infotainment.

Actually i wonder why would anyone believe anything Musk says but that is another topic.

This takes me back to my Nokia phones, from the 3210 to the N70… just turn it on and use it.

It also reminds me of running Stable Linux Mint without using PPA repos - so that your software collection is archaic… though now, we’re moving in the direction of a more stable or immutable system with containerised packaging…

Remember, though, your washing machine shouldn’t be connected to internet for downloading your TV content… and just looking at the reasons and improvements that lead to applications being updated can be quite enlightening…

Most of us are drawn to rolling releases so we can just ‘install qbittorrent’ or ‘install flaresolverr’ or whatever - and not worry about whether that’s going to get us into hot water by being outdated and insecure.

I know a few folks got banned from a few websites I use due to their using the wrong versions of software.

This is intriguing. Might be worth bringing this up in the Member Hub if you are willing to elaborate. (This thread has gone way OT!)

Also, referring to the washing-machine analogy, those need maintenance too. At least as far as cleaning the filter(s), occasionally replacing motor brushes, seals etc.

It’s surprising nobody has championed that resolve for those who insist on running grossly out of date system configurations.
