Upgrade to kernel 5.0 broke display

It seems you forgot to install the needed extramodules. Always install new kernels via mhwd-kernel tool or use Pamac. Both will ensure you will install the needed extramodules too.

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux50

All of those seemed to already be installed. I installed the kernels through pacman. When I ran the command you just gave me it re-installed linux50-5.0.1-1 linux50-bbswitch-0.8-1 linux50-headers-5.0.1-1 linux50-nvidia-1:418.43-1. I rebooted after running that command and re-installing and I still cannot boot to login or drop into tty

Is there anything ‘interesting’ in journalctl?

After failing to boot with the 50 kernel reboot into 420 and run
journalctl -b-1
and look for error messages and the like.

(journalctl -b-1 -p3 will restrict it to error messages only…)

Thanks for the info. This is what I’m seeing in terms of errors (when I run the second command)

According to this log, it seems to think it was a successful boot?

I was able to get to tty by appending a “3” at the end of my grub line that for the linux command. However, I still can not get into a gui when I execute startx from the tty. I also looked at both the x server logs and the lightdm and didn’t see anything too weird…

It might be worth trying a different graphics driver, particularly if it is causing problems with other kernels. Assuming you have an intel/nvidia combination there are 3 other commonish options.

Another option is just to remain on the the 419 or 420 kernel, generally there is no real need to use 50.

(Those temperature warnings are… not good, and worth sorting out.)

have you tried to just reinstall bumblebee? im asking not suggesting. i agree with @grinner

whats more important, using the newest kernel or putting out the campfire you apparently have going on inside that machine. on the bright side, you could make s’mores :fire::fire_engine:

I was also affected by this problem (and apparently also other people). I seems that this problem is unrelated to graphics.

For me it helped to boot into 4.20, to first downgrade to kernel 5.1.0.1 (linux50 an linux50-headers) and afterwards to reinstall the update (with pamac).

@grinner @dglt I will try these suggestions. I have not tried reinstalling bumblebee.

The temperature warnings don’t seem too too concerning. I see these warnings, but when the computer is booted cpu idles around 40 degrees C. One odd thing I did notice is that under load (what’s probably happening during boot too) the cpu temp does crank to near my maximum (80-90 degrees C) even though I am running TLP and cstates and the fans are on full blast (~5k rpm) according to lm_sensors. I wonder if my cpu is just running at too high a clock under load…

@tatue can you elaborate? You mean to uninstall linux50 and then reinstall?

to go from 40c to 80-90c just during boot is something to be concerned about, cooling is not working properly and that doesnt always mean bad fan control. when was the last time you cleaned the ventilation system (remove the dust, pet dander, lint from heatsink and fan casings)?

did you overclock, or mess with voltages in bios? if yes then you know the answer to your question already.

Never because the computer is only 3 months old. It’s a new Dell precision 5530. Also, no I did not overclock or mess with voltages at all (even though that’s want the high temps kind of seem like). I save that for my desktop

i’ve seen others with this hardware and had thermal throttling also, the arch wiki’s for the XPS models seem the closest to your hardware and solutions to certain problems.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_XPS_15_9570
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_XPS_15_9560

the other wiki’s for similar models might be of help to you also, some have solutions to issues not listed in the others.

hmm. This kernel already seems to have i8kmon for the dell fans built in. So I have good fan speeds and integration but for some reason the cores just get too hot…

This is happening to me too on Manjaro Budgie on a Dell XPS 9570.
Exactly the same. When upgrading to kernel 5, my screen won’t turn on any more. And I say this because it seems to not even have backlight, so It’s not a black screen, it’s that the screen is not turning on. Sometimes it tries, but it just flashes the backlight for a few seconds and turns off again. Falling back to kernel 4.20 works perfectly fine.

Here is my journalctl from the 5.0 boot. Any help solving this is highly appreciated.

Mar 21 23:37:46 manjaro systemd-journald[404]: Journal stopped

This already happened with the last stable update but I let it pass in hopes that it would get fixed in the coming one, but it seems that it is happening on this one too, and from the journal I just posted, I couldn’t get any useful information as the journal seems to think everything is working just fine and that lightdm executed just fine, when the screen isn’t even on. Any help would be kindly appreciated as this issue doesn’t seem like it’s going to get fixed on its own.

Tried solving it following https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=244190&p=2 using all possible values for acpi_backlight, and even though some of them such as native, made the backlight flash a few more times, I still only could get a black screen with no tty or lightdm or absolutely anything. I will keep searching, but it seems a lot of people are having this problem in different laptops with 5.0

i’ve heard of it a few times. it happened when i first started using 5.0, the first 2 boots only and after that no problem.
@pilililo2 it’s good to see someones first post containing actual useful information rather than “it’s broke, how i ifix?”, and it’s formatted properly! :exploding_head:.

since you both seem to have the same issue i think you should post some more info.

inxi -Fxxxz
mhwd -li
ls -la /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
grep -v /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*.conf
cat /etc/default/grub | grep CMDLINE

are you currently setup for nvidia xrun or is that leftover from another setup? (seen in your logs)
also, please mention any video related changes you’ve made recently and how it’s setup currently.
welcome to the forum.

Nevermind, seems it is a very well documented issue as of the last week. Seems in 5.0 Intel touched something in their graphics driver the shouldnt have touched.

Fix proposed:

You can see in the bug threads that the patch fixes the problem so I supposed it should get merged in the next release. I’ll just wait eagerly in myh 4.20

Thanks all for your help! Specially @dglt

EDIT: Once more we can confirm it’s just that bug, since it seems to be a thing with the XPS 9570, which is the laptop I’m running just now, and is the exact same laptop as the Dell Precision 5530, which is OP’s laptop  Lets hope it gets fixed in the next release.

Well if it takes a bit for the patch to work it’s way down the pipeline it’s really no cause for alarm. These kind of things are only to be expected on a freshly released kernel. It’s OK guys, you’ll survive just fine on 4.19 or 4.20 till the fix come through.
