Manjaro won't boot after update

After my grub menu, I boot and then this happens.

I can’t type in the emergency shell.

I’ve tried chrooting with a live USB and updating pacman and installing a new kernel, but I don’t know enough to do anything further :confused:.

Hi @rig,

Since you mentioned you tried chroot I’m presuming you know how to do it. So, boot with a thumb drive and enter a chroot environment. Also open a browser here, so that you can work there, read here, and copy & paste as necessary.

From the chroot environment, run and provide the output of the following:

mhwd --list
mhwd-kernel --list
mhwd-kernel --listinstalled

As well as:

so chroot into the system:
sudo manjaro-chroot -a
and run update again:
sudo pacman-mirrors -f5 && sudo pacman -Syyu
when done let us know

If there’s any other information that I can help provide, please let me know.

After chroot-ing, the results of the following are:

[manjaro-gnome /]# sudo pacman-mirrors -f5 && sudo pacman -Syyu

you have installed 516 kernel, and you were probably running it, and since it was dropped you couldnt boot with it, so uninstall it from chroot:
mhwd-kernel -r linux516
update-grub
mkinitcpio -P
exit
systemctl reboot
and see if you can normally boot now

This is far from being up to date.

So when I follow your advice, then update grub, I keep seeing that lsblk: /usr/lib/libsmartcols.so.1: version SMARTCOLS_2.38’ not found (required by lsblk)`

so I go to re-install util-linux-libs, which it can’t do because it requires util-linux-libs:

ok, so did you uninstall the 516?
try to reinstall tlinux libs:
pamac reinstall util-linux-libs

I’ve uninstalled all but 517

Currently running: 5.15.16-1-MANJARO (linux515)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux517

The currently running is an old live cd, but that shouldn’t matter I thought?

When trying to reinstall util-linux-libs, I get

Yes, the update-grub errors persist.

and try this:

and then, we have the same problem with update-grub as before with lsblk: /usr/lib/libsmartcols.so.1: version SMARTCOLS_2.38’ not found (required by lsblk)`

 there is nothing to do

This post seems to suggest all you need to do is re-install util-linux-libs (prev. libutil-linux), but I can’t work out how to do it successfully.

the same …version not found required by… issue could be resolved with downgrading, unfortunatelly it didnt work with you… the same issue, but he says there that he changed root, but i dont know what exactly he means by that…

Yeah nevermind. I kind of forgot that you are chrooted from live cd.
