Update / Upgrade failed after fresh Live-Iso Install

Hello there!

I installed download dot manjaro dot org/kde/24.1.2/manjaro-kde-24.1.2-241104-linux610.iso from USB onto my fairly old Toshiba Satellite C600 Laptop.

While the installation went smoothly without any issues,
any attempt to update (pacman -Syu) or upgrade (pacman -Syyu) either on CLI or via GUI (pamac) resulted in a unusable (Plasma-)GUI with missing applications. plasmoids, etc.

Even with selecting different mirrors (main-mirrors/ germany-mirrors) I had the same results.
That was really time consuming, as the wifi-/ethernet- connection couldn’t established because modem-manager/ Network-Manager was failing, missing or plasmoids and/or dependencies were not found.
So the only solution was, to install the system over and over again, to have at least a working system. :-/

  • What steps did I missed or could have be done differently?
  • Is this a known issue of the current KDE (Plasma) Live-Iso?
  • And most important, how I can solve it?

If you need further informations, please let me know.

Welcome to the forum.

Just to be clear, the inxi information that you show is from a system that was installed using manjaro-kde-24.1.2-241104-linux610.iso? The reason I ask is that these are not the versions that I would expect.

Yes, I used rufus under Windows to create the installer USB stick and that mentioned iso.
That went without any errors.

I’m sorry … but that is impossible.

As the download file shows - the kernel would be 6.10.

The ISO does not have kernel 6.5 anywhere on it.

Similarly you show a Plasma 5 system, when the ISO provides Plasma 6.

Are you sure you have been writing the correct ISO?

Plasma 5.27.8? Kernel 6.5? That is from a very old installation disk. I would download and try again. Are you posting an inxi from a previous installation? 4GB RAM and no swap found?

Can you post error messages from the update attempt(s)?

You are right 100%, I checked the Iso i used to create the Stick.
Because of User error I copied / installed the wrong (old) Iso on the Stick,
while the fresh downloaded Iso from the Website wasted Space in a subsubsub folder somewhere on the disk.

So I spent hours to track down a non existent error of mine without even checking the main basic thing.

FFFFFFF…rustrating!

Edit: Done fresh usb-stick and install and im tired now.
Thanks all for pointing me in the right direction.

The other one would technically be upgradeable but would take some care … the EOL kernel and the big changes between Plasma versions being just a few considerations.

All in all it would probably be easiest to use the modern ISO.
