Update to nvidia 520 switches off detection on VGA port

Hello everyone,

after the recent update on my laptop my external monitor in the VGA port won’t get recognised anymore: When booting with the monitor plugged in I see a duplicated view of my internal screen. After fully logging in the external screen gets deactivated. Replugging doesn’t help. What helps is plugging a (not connected) HDMI-to-VGA-adaptor into the HDMI-port - now the system correctly detects three screens (internal, external on VGA and “virtual” on HDMI). Removing the adaptor instantly deactivates the VGA port. An unconnected HDMI-cable doesn’t help.

I did a few things, but the situation didn’t change at all. So I hope you have some ideas on where to look on my system, what to try or where to post this next. Thanks a lot!

What I did:

The update:

I always rebooted between changes and some more.

With the recent updates to the nvidia driver, do you think it is still worth going through the hassle of installing optimus-manager? (suggested in https://forum.manjaro.org/t/vga-isnt-working-after-updating-to-nvidia-drivers/34353 ) Or would you recommend to wait for updates? Or even to uninstall nvidia-prime?

I have the feeling that the downgrade didn’t catch everything that was changed during the update.

I was working on the laptop and the external screen, did the update, restarted and then the screen had no signal, so it has to be something with the update.

just had a look at the logs again, this is all of the packages that got updated:

[2022-10-18T17:04:23+0200] [ALPM] upgraded glibc (2.36-5 -> 2.36-6)

I see also libxnvctrl and glibc in there, should I try downgrading those also?

The nvidia-utils and libxnvctrl versions should match.

NEVER downgrade important core packages like glibc.

So I did this

[2022-10-19T17:45:19+0200] [ALPM] downgraded linux54-nvidia (520.56.06-3 -> 515.76-3)
[2022-10-19T17:45:06+0200] [ALPM] downgraded linux510-nvidia (520.56.06-2 -> 515.76-4)

[2022-10-19T17:45:06+0200] [ALPM] downgraded mhwd-nvidia (520.56.06-2 -> 515.76-1)
[2022-10-19T17:44:53+0200] [ALPM] downgraded linux515-nvidia (520.56.06-3 -> 515.76-14)
[2022-10-19T17:44:53+0200] [ALPM] downgraded nvidia-utils (520.56.06-2 -> 515.76-1)
[2022-10-19T17:44:48+0200] [ALPM] downgraded libxnvctrl (520.56.06-1 -> 515.76-1)

but I still can’t use the VGA port on its own

When in the downgraded state I have the following, so I did something wrong with the downgrade.

$ systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service                                                   ✔

Downgrading packages are not supported. You’re probably making things worse at this point.

Keep researching your issue using keywords and error messages from your logs.

this means that the kernel version does not match the one for which the module was compiled, so you need to downgrade also kernels not only nvidia…
but before you mess with downgrading, it would be better to fix it, and use downgrade as a last option

Maybe the problem is plasma related:

renaming the folder kscreen to kscreen.bak in ~/.local/share and rebooting solved my issue
