BEHRINGER UMC202HD problems with detection and choppy audio

Hello there!
I got a BEHRINGER U-PHORIA UMC202HD (Quick Start Guide) audio interface on my hands, but it does not behave correctly at all.

Device is either not detected by the system at all, or audio is choppy and stutters - sound is constantly being skipped every second or so.

My motherboard - ASUS PRIME-X470-PRO (Manual) has only USB3.1 ports: x2 Gen 2 ports, x5 Gen 1 ports and one Type-C Gen 1 .
Depending on the used port and cable UMC202HD’s behavior is different. Here are the ways I have tried to connect it:

Original cable plugged into USB 3.1 Gen 2 port (LOOP)

System detects the device (notification flash), immediately looses it, detects it again and so on in an infinite loop.
Device itself is flashing lights like it constantly being powered on and off.

System does not detects the device.
Device itself is flashing lights once during powered on and then only the Power light stays on, as it should.

USB hub itself is plugged into the same USB 3.1 Gen 1 port
System does detects the device.
Looking in Plasma Audio settings UMC202HD 192k Pro is displayed with 3 available Profiles: Off, Analog Stereo Input and Pro Audio.
After setting profile to Pro Audio and trying to Test channels - I can hear only noise but in stereo.
Audacious and SMP are refusing to play any content, VLC and Firefox are playing everything without sound.
Spotify is able to play audio, but the sound is choppy.

Besides the original out-of-the box cable, I have tried two other USB 2.0 Type-A to Type-B cables. One brand new, one used. Unless I’m missing something, the only case with behaviour different from original cable was:

System does detects the device.
Looking in Plasma Audio settings UMC202HD 192k Pro is displayed with 8 available Profiles: Off, Analog Stereo Output + Analog Stereo Input, Analog Stereo Output, Analog Stereo Input, Analog Mono Input, Analog Mono (Left) Input, Analog Mono (Right) Input and Pro Audio.
After setting profile to Analog Stereo Output + Analog Stereo Input and trying to Test channels - I can hear TTS voice for left/right channels, but the sound is choppy.
All system sounds are present (Audacious, SMP, VLC, Firefox, Spotify, etc. are playing all the media) but sound is choppy everywhere.

How about trying different kernels?

When I first tried my MOTU M4, there were some noise on the sound.
But after changing to non-rt (realtime) kernel, the noise was gone.

Have you tried the responses you got when you posted about this on Reddit a few hours ago? I’ll post the link here in case it helps other people.

You could make sure that your sample rates are the same on your computer and your interface.
Have you tried using the Jack audio connection kit?
I have Jack2 and JackCtl (a jack controller) installed. You need to start jack from the controller.

If the Reddit community solved your problem, please mark this as solved with the solution you used, which might help others.

Update on the situation:

I have tested UMC202HD on win10 laptop with USB 3 Type-A and Type-C (using a hub) ports, with and without Behringer proprietary drivers, and device is always detected there.
But I have noticed similar stutters persist there too, however they are nowhere near as noticeable as on Linux - no recognizable pattern, but a stutter usually happens once every 5 to 10 minutes - sometimes more often, sometimes less often.

So, I decided to attempt to do a refund, while it is still possible.

Before sending it out I have tried a few things:

  • Checking the device from Live-USB of Manjaro and Ubuntu 21.10 (latter managed to screw up my GRUB)
  • Switching kernel from 5.16.2-1 to LTS 5.10.93-1 and back.
  • Switching to untested branch of Manjaro and testing the interface with fresh PipeWire 0.3.45, among other things.
  • Following the suggestion from reddit thread and creating a file /etc/modprobe.d/behringer.conf with the following line: options snd_usb_audio implicit_fb=1

Neither of the attempts displayed any significant difference with detecting device or choppy audio.
If I am not mistaken, after the creating behringer.conf file, the interface refused to playback any audio at all.

I’ll update post, if I’ll get some response from the retailer.

Another update:

After sending UMC202HD back (no response from retailer yet), I picked up Behringer U-PHORIA UMC204HD.

This one worked near perfectly out-of-the-box: detected by the system on all tested USB ports, audio playback is clean without any stutters.

Only problem with UMC204HD was that the detected profiles were limited to combinations of Analog Surround 4.0 Output and Analog/Digital Stereo Inputs, when I have stereo headphones and a mono mic.

The solution to this was found in the pipewire configuration file. I have copied the config template from system-wide to user folder:

And then added virtual sink and source to the ~/.config/pipewire/pipewire.conf, following the examples on PipeWire wiki.
