Update from 2025-12-08 crashes system. Switch back to x11 only option?

Hi everybody,

since 5 years manjaro is happily running on my pc, but since last update I encounter a severe error of my majaro system. I found out that there is a gpu issue related to the wayland system.

With chromium, vivaldi and trezor-suite the relevant error message is:

I tried different kernel:

All with same error messages.

The only chance for me to solve the issue was to switch back to X11
But when I understand it correctly X11 will not be supportet in future…
What else can I do?

The current nvidia driver is 580.105.08-4

Hi, have you checked the Known issues and solutions ?

When you have issues with chromium based browsers and electron based applications it may trace back to the applications trying to use hardware acceleration but fails.

The failure would then relate to the GPU driver in use vs the GPU model.

I have no extensive experience with Nvidia. I have dual-gpu Lenovo Legion with Intel/Nvidia 5070 running Plasma 6, currently being tested by my gamer daughter, so far no complaints - but still - anything can happen.

I am thinking you may need to install the opensource GPU drivers

sudo mhwd -i pci video-linux

Which version of the proprietary drivers will work best for your system - I have no idea.

Plasma has planned to fully remove x11 support starting with Plasma 6.8, although that may not be set on stone - no one can know what happens tomorrow.

Xfce is more conservative - so if you are in a complete disaster situation - and prepared for the work implied - you could switch to use Xfce.

Switching kernel is good for obtaining kernel support for newer hardware.

I suggest you remove kernels earlier than 6.12 - they are like of of litte use.

The Nvidia driver is not part of the kernel - Manjaro provides versioned drivers for supported kernels where 580 is the latest.

  • video-nvidia provides the latest 580xx
  • video-nvidia-570xx provides 570xx
  • video-nvidia-470xx provides 470xx
  • video-nvidia-390xx provides 390xx

Thanks for that link. I rechecked it but I can’t find a hint for my problem.
It’s the recent nvidia driver that might have the issue in combination with my graphics card I guess…

Thanks for the tip, but the open source driver isn’t sufficient for my darktable application. I need the graphics card acceleration…
I’ve gotten used to kde plasma, would hate to switch, but xfce would be an alternative, thanks.

When searching on Nvidia web for drivers supporting your GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER I get download links for - 590xx, 580xx, 570xx, 535xx.

So the driver you have installed 580xx is the most recent in the official repos.

What is the output of

pacman -Qqm

I assume - since you looked at the update thread - you know that it is still possible to use x11?

sudo pacman -Syu plasma-x11-session

Logout - change session in the session dropdown - login

My solution is to use X11 instead. And that works fine :slightly_smiling_face:
I’m just worried because in the long term the x11 support will be lost.
Therefore, it should be known that there are still problems with wayland. In my opinion, X11 support should not be stopped as long as there are problems with wayland. (Although this may be due to defects in the proprietary nvidia driver)

On your system perhaps - but not in general - I have been using wayland since Plasma 6 was in alpha stage - I have never had any major issues - I don’t know why - it is how it is.

There was a few glitches in alfa and bete - but that is to be expected - and now with Plasma 6.5 - there hasn’t been any reason for complaints.

X11 to Wayland - it is a major shift - no question about that - it will require users to learn new ways - but it is not difficult or complicated.

Some will insist to stay - they will eventually sink into oblivion…

The 580 series nvidia driver has many issues for many users, switching to the older driver should fix your issues. Staying on X11 is not a solution as it will be removed in the next big plasma update.

Same for me, I was always happy with wayland. Just with the last update I have the first time trouble with it…

Ok I haven’t tried to change the driver yet. I can check the 570 series. The older ones I guess are not recommended for my card

Thank God this still works. Used Wayland for 15 min and I cant do anything I want to do on my PC. Most of my applications breaking, copy/pasting broken in my remote software, brave acting crazy… I mistakenly did not pay attention to this update and it dropping x11. I think I will sit on the current update for a while.

Using Wayland was like floating through oblivion unable to move and interact with the world around you.

It is just possible that nVidia will have finally fixed THEIR issues with Wayland, by then. Keep on posting to the nVidia Forums, regarding issues with their GPUs and Drivers on Wayland.

580 series seems to have issues with older cards like 20xx series and so on …
