Unable to use dedicated graphics on razer blade 15 2019 edition

I am unable to get my dedicated graphics card to work on my laptop. The drivers seem to be installed, but are not running. Nvidia settings shows 2 tabs, and when loading it through command line, it says the driver isnt loaded. Any help would be appreciated. The graphics card is a RTX 2070 maxQ

Hi @GigaFlop, and welcome!

In order for us, or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

Hope you manage!

:bangbang: Tip: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Please edit your post accordingly.

Ive added my inxi, hope it helps

And … did you do anything to install drivers? What/how?

So to install drivers, I used the hardware tool in settings to install proprietary drivers. I should be using nvidia-prime drivers, the hybrid ones with intel. It even shows as much in the settings

Well, in the inxi output, it states there id no driver for it. Yet,

mwhd reports it as installed…

So all I can think of is removing them:

sudo mhwd --remove pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime

And then rebooting.

Then reinstall those drivers:

sudo mhwd --install pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime

And, obviously, rebooting again.

When done, check the inxi output again to see if it’s installed. Report back.

well ive done as you said, remove reboot install reboot, inxi reports the same as before

and the nvidia settings app still has the same issue so I dont think this fixed it
is it possible the driver isnt registered to load somehow?

interesting thing ive found
driconf gives the following error, no idea if its helpfull

There are errors in a driver's configuration information:
invalid type 'string' (driver iris) (screen 0)
This should not happen. It probably means that you have to update DRIconf.

Does this imply a configuration issue?

Not me, but maybe someone else.

Anyway, just found this where it states:

If the discrete NVIDIA GPU is switched off before starting Xorg or Wayland, then the system freezes. The only possible solution is to manually disable/enable the discrete card after starting the graphical session. However, there is an ACPI DSDT fix available which fixes this problem. Check the repository and DSDT for more information.

So it might be that. In fact, it does sound like it. So, I’m guessing that, at least for now, that is your only option.

Seems right, the only issue is i need to modify the grub bootloader to get it to work. The only examples in the repo are in issues, and they are for ubuntu, so its a bit different
i think i identified the line i needed to change but when i changed it the system stopped booting, had to fix it via a live boot. Any advice, i seem to need to load an img file called razer_acpi_fix.img before the main boot img (assuming im understanding any of this correctly)

None from me…sorry…

:sob:

alright, ill bash my head against the problem and report back when either it works or i have brain damage lol

1 Like

If you have brain damage, you might not nee able to report back.

Regarding:

@Aragorn might know how to do this or know someone that does. But I don’t, unfortunately.

So im relitively sure i got the file to load, but it didnt do anything?
I didnt get the intended output and it didnt seem to fix the issue
Interestingly the laptop seems to run a fair bit hotter with the fix than without, so its probably waking up the gpu but not doing much else?
Maybe the blade 2016 fix wont work for a blade 2019?

I think, the reverse the changes, and any more than that :man_shrugging:

well im at a dead end for now, i dont think its specific to the hardware and i think its a software issue but there are so many places this could of gone wrong that i dont even know where to start.
