Unable to Sign into Manjaro via GUI Login Prompt

Recently I installed zsh, tmux, and nvchad to try switching to a new desktop environment, I only mention this because I imagine the issue is a result of me botching config while figuring all this stuff out. I’ve set zsh as my default shell, I’m using the oh-my-zsh config.

Since rebooting the computer I am no longer able to sign into the operating system via the graphical login prompt. I am able to switch to another tty and sign in normally, all of the new tooling I installed works perfectly fine as well. I did delete ~/.bash_profile at some point, which had some export settings for QT environment variables, I do not believe this was related to manjaro, but I did recreate it with no change. If that is related I can grab those files.

I got an output from journalctl after trying to sign in twice and it looks like the system is just firing a logoff event after the login. Logs below:

There’s an obvious looking error about systemd-homed not being available, but most fixes I see regarding it have more to do with preventing the error from being thrown when the everything is running smoothly as opposed to solving an actual problem.

Please excuse any poor formatting, I’m going to check over how it appears as soon as I’ve submitted the post and clean it up, move the logs into the file if need be, etc.

Huge amateur here, thanks for any help in advance!

Welcome to the forum!

The first thing I notice when looking at your log excerpt is that you’re running lightdm as your display manager — i.e. the login screen — while your profile says you’re using KDE Plasma. While it should in theory be possible to use lightdm with Plasma, it is generally a Bad Idea™ to do so, because lightdm is a gtk-based login manager, while Plasma normally uses sddm, which is qt-based, like Plasma itself.

Other than that, you do indeed appear to have made a mess of things, because zsh would normally already be installed by default — it is the default shell for graphical terminals in all three of the official Manjaro editions, and probably in the community editions as well by now.

Considering that we don’t know what else you may have done to your system to get you in this weird state, my advice to you — based upon your concession that you’re an amateur — would be to make backups of your important data and just reinstall the system from a recent .iso.

:man_shrugging:

It was a really stupid mistake. Just posting this here for anyone else that might break their startup scripts and have to follow a similar line of troubleshooting to find the issue.

Lightdm only showed success in the journal, but since I couldn’t find any more useful information on the systemd-homed issue, everything I could find was a non-issue, or said it wasn’t used, I dug into the lightdm logs:
/var/log/lightdm/
In those logs there was an error reported to be sent to .xsession logs, and following that led me to a bad line in my zsh scripts that was trying to load, and it turns out I was just trying to launch a bash_completion file for nvm that didn’t exist, or no longer existed. When I was rewriting my scripts I guess I copied some lines from a file that never actually got used anymore.

I’m not sure why this didn’t break my other tty’s, since they load from the same place, I was able to immediately access my ssh keys etc in tty2, so it was pulling the same scripts. :person_shrugging:
