I can relate to that. I am writing code to support living - without several working systems I cannot do my job.
Not a guide as such, but I have in the past described how to check the .ISO written to a Ventoy device; basically, download the sha256sum file (select the “More” button on the download page, right-click and “Save As …”) and put it in the same directory¹ as the .ISO, then run e.g.
sha256sum -c manjaro-kde-26.0-260104-linux618.iso.sha256
… maybe the simplest way to do it and it works just as easily when using a Ventoy USB.
¹ Just saves having to put the paths in, if you use the same directory.
Working on a reinstall of manjaro. Same problem “Unable to contact settings server”. If you wait a long time without ever touching the mouse you can press enter and end up on a login prompt. User: Manjaro. I tried an empty password and “manjaro” but you can’t proceed.
I am using : Manjaro xcfe 26.0.1, 20260114 minimal.
What worked for me was : Manjaro xcfe 25.0.10, 20251013 full.
Booted as expected using the identical bios settings.
The following is entirely speculation and my thoughts on the thread.
I have searched the through the ISO to find the message and it relates to the following three (3) binaries
/usr/bin/xfce4-session
/usr/bin/xfce4-session-settings
/usr/bin/xfdesktop-settings
This tells us that for some reason - on specific hardware - the xfce session cannot start.
Xfce ISO uses lightdm display manager (login screen) as greeter.
If the display manager fails due to lack of GPU support - the whole chain fails - including the xfce session.
The reference to Could not connect: No such file or directory may refer to expected hardware (/sys or /run or /dev) not being available.
There is one mention of using AMD hardware I didn’t know existed.
Decades ago, 15+ years, as I recall it, AMD was something to avoid like the plague, I ran into some serious issues and lost quite a bit of money (in my company) due to bad AMD hardware.
This has changed, AMD is not what it was, but the fact that the 26.0(.1) ISO has issues may or could be due to the kernel 6.18.
The Manjaro ISO 25.0.10 is using kernel 6.12 and as that ISO is doable, it could very well relate to either the kernel or the Mesa drivers.
I vaguely recall reading something about certain AMD GPU drivers which moved from and old package into the kernel.
Im using an ASUS prime x370-pro and a SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon RX 590 8GB
If I wait for the “close” option in the message to light up and press enter (without ever using the mouse) the login screen get is graphical too (default one I also get on my working install).
Turning off silent/splash, two warnings:
asus_wmi: failed to register LPSO sleep handler In asus-wmi
amdgpu 0000:01:00.0: amdgpu: [drm] Failed to setup vendor infoframe on connector
Hello,
I tried xfce 26 full iso on VirtualBox (just downloaded and checked for sha256sum). After booting and selecting french language, keyboard and time zone, I tried starting Manjaro.
First time, with standard parameters and open drivers : after some time I got the 3 running dots, for a long time and nothing else.
Second and third time, I edited boot parameters and removed quiet and splash, Manjaro finished with message for the settings server being unavailable.
I had no problem with xfce 25 … So what could I try ?
[Edit] No problem with kde 26 full iso … I get the Manjaro hello popup.
