Unable to Boot/Login after Crash during upgrade

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to upgrade my system using the GUI Updater, but due to a short curcuit (did you know USB-C fits into USB-A holes) my system crashed.

Grub still worked, but trying to boot threw errors (also tried the initramfs fallback and an older kernel)

After using a live-USB with manjaro-chroot and running an pamac upgrade allowing downgrades my system boots again into a login screen. The update has installed a kernel, now this kernel was shown in grub, and the older kernel disappeared.

Now I can access a KDE Login screen, but no theme loads and when trying to log in the system shows a black screen for a moment, and then returns back to the inital login screen (when trying X11 instead of wayland a cursor is shown on a black screen but nothing happens). On the login screen an error message is shown.

The current theme cannot be loaded due to the errors below, please select another theme.

I can access a TTY using the keyboard shortcuts, but am not sure what to do there.
Maybe some partition is not mounted properly? I do not know what to check next.

What you do there is:
log in and run the update again.

sudo pacman-mirrors -f
sudo pacman -Syu

I’m not confident enough to give you the correct equivalent pamac command since I very rarely use it.

pacman will do just fine

the USB-A holes had me laugh out loud - the double meaning, not your mishap!

I already tried updating the mirrors, it didn’t change anything unfortunately

Updating the mirrors will just ensure the list is current.
sudo pacman -Syu
will run the update.

In that case - and because NVIDIA is involved - I cannot really help you.

We would need some more context of the error messages
and system information.

If you are not comfortable on the command line (TTY) then booting from a Manjaro ISO and chrooting would likely be better, since that will give you a graphical session to give feedback.

I’m totally out of my depth with anything involving Nvidia issues.

Some advice on what logs could help would be nice. I know how to navigate and use the CLI, but have no idea how to fix the inner workings of a Linux system

But I also have a live USB available if that helps

That could mean that the issue is easily solved by editing the display managers config and putting another theme - the default theme.

But that is just a hunch.

In
/etc/sddm.conf.d/
there are some files

I have there:

00_manjaro_settings.conf

In
kde_settings.conf

is this:

[Autologin]

Session=plasma

[Theme]
Current=breath
CursorTheme=breeze_cursors

That is the default.
Yours is likely different.

There was no session selected in my config. I added plasma.
What are some other themes available?

I just tried running after login into X11 mode for some time (black screen with cursor), and it started showing an error that the screensaver was broken and I had to run a command on a TTY to unlock. Running the command the system went back to the black screen with cursor.

Are there any log files that could help debugging?

Well, the error you quoted makes two points obvious:

1. The current theme cannot be loaded
2. module "org.kde.kirigami" is not installed

You could try installing kirigami (from within a chroot environment) to see if that might resolve the issue.

sudo pacman -S kirigami

As is said, “nothing ventured, nothing gained”; however, the hard reset you described might have damaged anything; it’s difficult to predict.

Usually, in similar situations we might suggest working through a tutorial such as Recovering from an Interrupted Update/Upgrade, the general gist of which seems not unlike what you have already tried, yourself.

Mentioned earlier was to run the update again from chroot; this can’t hurt. As you seem to be more inclined to use pamac-cli, you could try the following:

pamac update --no-aur --force-refresh

and if that succeeds;

pamac update --aur

(if you have installed software from the AUR) and;

flatpak update

(again, optional)

Reboot and see what the status is then.

I am open to using pacman as well (even though I can never remember the options.

My first update command was from a chroot since the system wouldn’t Boot at all (kernel level issues)

When trying to install kirigami my screen was flooded with errors that files exist in filesystem.

The update commands show that the system is up to date

X11 or Wayland sessions are usually selectable from the SDDM screen, before you login. Are you saying there were not available?

Also from chroot?

From chroot, you could also try removing kirigami;

sudo pacman -Rns kirigami

and then installing it again (rather than reinstalling).

What I suggested (tried to suggest) was:
take what I posted as an example - this is the default configuration,
for me, in a VM - the default for me is not wayland, but xorg

Whatever theme is listed in your current file - replace it with

[Theme]
Current=breath
CursorTheme=breeze_cursors

… simply edit the file …

But this:

may be a sign that more than just the theme is damaged …

Provide it from a TTY (when you can). It will avoid all of those "12"s, which make it difficult for others to find anything.

journalctl --boot=-1 --no-pager

The --boot=-1 is the previous boot. Adjust this as needed - -2 for the previous boot, -3, and so on; and --no-pager formats the output nicely for the forum.

At this point, I’m simply adding whatever might potentially be useful, for example; if it reaches a point where graphics need to be reinstalled;

Is there a good way to get the logs out of the TTY?
With the chroot it is easy to get a browser to copy the text out

edit: nvm, I can write it to a file and read using chroot

breath is set in the settings, the thing is I don’t know which alternatives are available

No need for TTY.
Just provide that same command output, but not from within chroot.

Or - as I learned recently (from linux-aarhus or from Aragorn, can’t recall):
inxi -zv8c0
from within chroot

(the 12s are from misinterpreted colored output
adding -c0 supresses that and makes the output readable)

I am already considering reinstalling, though it is quite a bit of work collecting all the software I want again, and configuring stuff (even though most config is fortunately under /home/)

both installing free and nonfree graphic drivers tells me that they are already installed

I might try to remove, and then reinstall them tomorrow, it is getting late.
