Two monitors, how to configure the second one?

Hi,

I was looking for a solution, but somehow it seems there has been none posted yet or I was looking at the wrong place. Hence this new topic:

I just installed a second monitor, which works fine. However, there are two issues:

  1. The second monitor is located above the other. The virtual desktop manager has automatically positioned it to the right of the existing one (which forces me to move the mouse to the right when I want to go to the upper monitor). This is confusing and doesn’t work well.
  2. The resolution of the second monitor seems to be set to something like 1024x800 or so, while the monitor is able to display 2048x1024.

For both these problems I haven’t found a way to solve it. I use wayland Plasma, I just updated everything. I am looking for a GUI thing that allows me to set the position as well as the resolution of the second monitor. The graphics card should be able to handle both monitors, but I don’t have the exact specs.

Hi @DrMartinus,

This should help with the lack of specs. Please provide the output of:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8 --color=0

Please also note and heed: Forum Rules - Manjaro

Those with privacy concerns: note that when -z, or --filter is used, all personally identifiable information is filtered out from the resulting inxi output. :eyes:

Hope you manage!

:bangbang: Tip for legibility: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Please edit your post accordingly.

Right click on the desktop and select Display Configuration, near the top is a diagram of your monitors and just underneath you’ll see “Edit Arrangement”, click on that and move your monitors to where you want them, then click “Collapse”, and then apply.

You can also get there via System Settings → Display and Monitor → Display Configuration

You should be able to change the resolution there too, assuming the resolution you want is available.

Right click on the desktop background, then select “Display Configuration”. In the menu you can change the positioning as well as the resolution of the respective screen.

Thanks for your replies, I wish it was that easy, then I would have done it already. Right click on the desktop does not provide the mentioned option, and System settings offer only “Nightlight” settings when choosing “Display and Monitor”, nothing else. Could this be related to the fact that I am using Wayland?

Make sure kscreen is installed.

sudo pacman -S kscreen

EDIT:

You may (or may not) need to reboot afterwards.

It seems I didn’t need to reboot. Now the orientation is right, when I move the mouse upward, I get into the upper monitor. However, it still sees it as an extension of the virtual desktop, i.e. if I move a window from the virtual desktop 4 to the upper monitor, it disappears if I change the virtual desktop in the lower monitor. I want the window in the upper monitor to be accessible no matter what virtual desktop I am in on the lower monitor. Is that possible? I see no option for that in the settings.

Right click on the task manager icon for the window → Move to Desktop → All Desktops

EDIT:

Here are a few links regarding actually having separate virtual desktops per screen. Spoiler alert, it’s not possible atm, but there’s some info regarding using activities to accomplish something similar:

Ah, ok. That works! Thank you very much! Why isn’t kscreen installed by default? It makes settings accessible which many people would like to access, I guess. Or is it a glitch on my system, a random failure that usually doesn’t happen? I know that I didn’t uninstall it (at least I’m pretty sure that I didn’t; maybe there was an issue long time ago which forced the uninstallation of kscreen in order to perform a system upgrade, but I wouldn’t remember if that was the case).

It usually is.

Have you added KDE to a system originally installed with another DE, such as Sway?

If so then you probably haven’t installed everything.

Thanks for the additional info about other threads relating to this issue! I’ll check if I can make use of the suggestions. It would be nice if this would be a bit easier, also because now my virtual desktop overview in the control panel looks cramped because it tries to show the contents of the two monitors, and since I set it to display the virtual desktops in two rows, now it tries to show basically the contents of 4 monitors in the limited space of the control panel.

No, I have always used KDE, there was a short period of time when I used other distros, but KDE was always my favourite. What is sway? Why is that there? Maybe that has to do with wayland?

It’s a tiling Window Manager.

Both swayidle and swaylock are related to Wayland but they’re for Sway.

I’d assumed you’d converted Sway to Plasma, which would explain both that and the fact that kscreen wasn’t installed. Perhaps you installed Sway or part of it. :man_shrugging:

Here’s mine :down_arrow:, as you can see there’s no swayidle or swaylock.

wm: kwin_wayland vt: 1 dm: SDDM Distro: Manjaro base: Arch Linux

EDIT:

You can set it to show only one monitor.

Right click on the Pager widget → Configure Pager → General → Show only current screen

Thank you once again! I assumed the “show only current screen” relates to the current virtual desktop, hence I never enabled it. But now I understand its meaning and find it quite useful. :slight_smile:

Regarding sway it’s strange. Sway isn’t installed, and I really do not remember having installed it at any point of time. Well, at least I know now for what it’s for.
