Twas a rough old night, last night.

  1. Tower has been behaving well for a “long” time now wrt those earlier “classic” Freezes, but i cannot pinpoint why this is so.
  2. Not causing Freezes as such, but a protracted cause for anxiety in case it lead to freezes, had been Manjaro's Xorg memory-gobbling issue.

  1. Another recent event, dunno if related here or not but certainly might be, is Journal errors, & my recent decision to manually delete files...
    ◇ See journalctl --verify errors... what to do then?
  2. Per my log in #2 above, late yesterday arvo something went badly awry with sudo / sudoers, & from this point a rapid systemic deterioration occurred, whereby existing applications stopped working properly, other applications refused to launch, closing applications still left their processes active, logging out attempts were ignored [ditto reboot], REISUB was ignored...
  3. That sorry saga culminated in having to do hard Resets, after which regardless of which Manjaro kernel was selected, boot failed with kernel panic.
  4. For several weeks now my Tower has been dual-boot of Manjaro [SSD] with Fedora30 [HDD]. The F30 boots & operation remained ok.
  5. Concluding that my next step had to be a chroot rescue/repair via LiveUSB boot, i did so, but was simply shocked to see this also failed:

  1. Now more than a little anxious, not least by browsing the Manjaro Forum within that LiveUSB session & finding several historical precedents of my problem with the common advice recommendations being “time to do a reinstall”, i remembered i still have my fallback failsafe option of a Timeshift Restore [most recent snapshot being the preceding night]. Therefore i did this.
  2. TS gave all indications of success, & indeed the consequent reboot did not experience any kernel panic. Almost immediately however i could see something was not good... I was given no prompt to insert my LUKS password to unlock my encrypted SSD /home partition, instead being taken immediately to the login screen. During login, the wrong splash-screen showed, then after login i was left NOT with my own heavily personalised Desktops, Activities, Widgets & Panels, but instead the standard stock OOTB default Manjaro Plasma look. Eeek.
  3. I discovered that for unknown reasons, though never doing this to me before, this time TS had NOT reinstated my own fstab & crypttab files, but had generated plain vanilla ones. Once i overwrote these fallacious files with my backup copies, then rebooted, my Manjaro is all good again.
  4. Imponderables: What caused the initial sudoers failure? Was my recent manual deletion of those two corrupt Journal files causal here? Why did Timeshift misbehave?

Have posted this really just as a FYI, not because of any current need for help. Glad to have recovered it, but i confess to a bit of sweaty hands stuff for a while there last night.

As a plasma user can you confirm that octopi was removed from Manjaro KDE?( [18.1.0-pre2 )

Error message indicates a missing so-file.

Seems unlikely.
But (journal-)file corruption and (out of the blue?) missing files make me wonder if the filesystem and/or underlying hardware are working properly.

Ooh, good idea. Last night when i was booted into the LiveUSB i forgot to manually run fsck to check, but [for a long time now], fwiw, i do have self-checks run weekly during boots for my ext4 partitions [but not all my partitions ARE ext4], for Manjaro / on SSD:

I admit i have never really understood what this function is supposed to do in the event it perchance does detect FS damage... does it then fix it, does it shrug its shoulders & just move on without fixing it, does it somehow notify me [i never see any feedback from it on this]?

If I'm reading man e2fsck correctly, the -p switch will be used for boot time checks and you will only be informed of errors requiring human interaction.

       -p     Automatically repair ("preen") the file system.  This option
              will cause e2fsck to automatically fix any filesystem problems
              that can be safely fixed without human intervention.  If
              e2fsck discovers a problem which may require the system
              administrator to take additional corrective action, e2fsck
              will print a description of the problem and then exit with the
              value 4 logically or'ed into the exit code.  (See the EXIT
              CODE section.)  This option is normally used by the system's
              boot scripts.  It may not be specified at the same time as the
              -n or -y options.

You should also check your drives' SMART status; maybe even run the extended tests (if they can/are supported).

When i first read this i misunderstood, & wrongly thought that you were talking about what i am using... which is tune2fs... for which -p is not an available option [ergo explaining my confusion as to how i could have previously missed seeing/using that option]. In fact i now see that you were not referring to this, but instead to e2fsck.

That man e2fsck extract you quoted says "This option is normally used by the system's boot scripts", however i do not know how to make that happen, & a DDG search today did not help me. Oh well.

Before writing this post i have once again re-read man tune2fs. I remain just as clueless as before as to the answer to my earlier [rhetorical?] question:

Otoh, i have no such doubt re manually running sudo fsck -f /dev/sdaX when booted from a LiveUSB. Given that late last night when i attempted to Suspend my Tower before i went to bed & it ignored me, & then it initially also ignored my attempts to make it shutdown [i eventually cajoled it into cooperation, but then noticed within the DMESG messages that whilst it successfully dismounted my various SSD partitions including Manjaro `/`, it failed to dismount my HDD... grrrrr], i decided this morning i would boot with LiveUSB & force the fsck with repair if needed, on my two ext4 partitions.

This was the result... good for SSD Manjaro /, errors found/fixed for the HDD:

All that seems to mean is that your seagate drive was misreporting free blocks. Nothing that would cause sudo issues to my knowledge. Good thing you fixed it though, because that could cause issues later on your seagate.

Normally a default installation will sometime run fsck at boot. It is surprising if yours does not. :face_with_monocle:

What does your fstab look like. (cat /etc/fstab)

Also can you confirm that fsck appears in your 'HOOKS=...' line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf.

Ta for the Wiki link. Have read it before, albeit not recently. Re-read it now. It much-mentions checking the FS at boot, but that's not my interest... ideally i'd like it to check & repair the FS during boot, so that i can stop periodically, manually, booting into LiveUSB & doing it myself [like i had to again this morning]. Maybe i'm misinterpreting it, but where the Wiki does mention explicitly forcing repairs, IMO that just seems to be the manual [offline] method like i already periodically do as stated.

I might be wrong but in my limited experience when a check at boot finds a problem it pops into interactive mode to ask for instructions to repair (or otherwise). Maybe it deals with minor cases automatically...?

Could try setting the check frequency to 1 (at least temporarily) to see if that might be the case - if it is the case then another corruption should demonstrate the behaviour.

I am absolutely definitely positively not saying you're wrong. However all i can say is that over the past few years, there has not been one single solitary time i have done a normal standard boot of Tower when it has alerted me to any filesystem issues that either were present but that it self-fixed, or that needed my inputs. Conversely [& IIRC this forum includes a plethora of posts from me involving this] there have been a substantial number of times, sadly [most typically immediately after the horrid spate of abrupt freezes that this pc used to manifest over several months but for reasons i don't understand have not occurred again since 3 April (OMZ wot have i done! why did i write this? now i am doomed!!)], when me then booting a LiveUSB & manually fscking found & fixed the sorts of errors i posted above [frequently both SSD & HDD, less often SSD only, least often HDD only]. That cumulative personal experience implies [but does not prove] that no auto-repairs, nor interactive repairs, occur during boot on my Tower. Maybe this is yet another symptom of my tedious tenacious terrible poultrygoose?

Whilst certainly i am not opposed to doing this, pls note the following, which i suspect likely mitigates any practical benefit. My standard longterm workflow includes nightly Suspend of Tower, not Shutdown, hence each subsequent morning begins with Resume not Start. Tower's on Testing-branch, & whilst it can be a struggle to achieve this, ideally i aim for Uptimes of 5 - 7 days, for which goal i make moment-to-moment decisions about whether i want to accept Updates that i know will need a reboot, vs queue them up til i reach my desired UT. The practical outcome of this is, given my deployed tune2fs setting of 7d, that most times when i eventually do do an Update needing a reboot, said boot ergo runs the filesystems check/s. It's just that, as stated, these have never ever told me of any problems [unless they are merely doing so by some arcane journal entry i'm supposed to be manually checking].

Please remember that I am only trying to offer (hopefully helpful) advice based on my own limited experience, and am reaching somewhat to do so. No skin off my nose if I quit. :relaxed: (And even if useless nothing I have suggested should have been in any way harmful.)

So what you are saying is that although fsck (sometimes/often) runs at boot it has never informed you of any errors? That seems problematic.

It should be possible to fsck a booted machine as long as unmounting the partition does not get in the way - it being impossible AFAIK to fsck a mounted partition.

Oh dear -- i do hope you've not misinterpreted my replies as in some/any way besmirching you? That's not my intention at all. I merely hoped to convey my own facts & observations as counterpoint & fyi. My logic is simply that if i can convey all the pertinent facts of my scenario as best i know them, it provides helpful Manjaroos the optimum chance of forming their own logical troubleshooting steps when they kindly offer suggestions. Certainly i have no hidden agenda here to be negative.

Agreed, & hence if i wanted to i could always unmount my HDD then manually fsck it, within my standard Manjaro session [not LiveUSB]. However afaik that's simply impossible to do with the SSD's / partition coz, well, it's Manjaro's root. Hence all those LiveUSB sessions...

I think that the checks are called by systemd-fsck@.service and systemd-fsck-root.service (usr/lib/systemd/system).

Reading man systemd-fsck one would expect to be dropped to the emergency shell during boot if fsck detected a problem, excepting cases where fsck.mode or fsck.repair are present on the kernel command line (i.e. in /etc/default/grub or by editing grub on boot) or where nofail is specified. Quoting for precision:

Logically either fsck has not found problems with your system on boot, or something is causing it not to work as expected. Like Carrie :face_vomiting: ... or Damien :cold_face: ...
