Troubleshooting Dumped Core system crash xfce (Xorg, xfce4-session, xfce4-display-settings, xfsettingsd)

Disclaimer, this is a lot of information and way over my head but I’m willing to work with you guys if anyone has any suggestions!

Basically I have no idea what’s going on, but Xorg, lightdm, xfsettingsd and xfce4-session are dumping core sometimes multiple times per day. (seems random but I know nothing is ever random if you know where to look, but I don’t know where to look lol). Also it doesn’t appear to be happening when I’m using the computer, I only notice it when I log back into the computer (usually in mornings and notice all my applications on the desktop have been closed.

This computer is off-site so I don’t have physical access to the machine. Everything is done remotely (using nomachine). Honestly the system is usable and always starts back up after the crash, the problem is that I have some virtual machines running which appear to be improperly shut down at each xorg crash, also every running program I have on the desktop is shut down and I have to restart what I was doing on that computer which is highly frustrating.

Anyway, I’ll post some logs here but again, I really don’t know where to look. Also not sure if I should be posting this information to the public so if you guys see anything that shouldn’t be here please let me know so I can edit the personal content.

Again, I know it’s a lot of information and probably something that will never get fixed, but for the sake of my own sanity I wanted to post something and hope for the best. Thanks to all you guys who know more about Linux that I do and for all your hard work and time you put into making Manjaro work.

  1. Can you provide a full inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width ?

  2. Can you provide the output of

    smartctl --all /dev/sda

    for all of your disks?

  3. adapta-gtk-theme is quite old. Have you tried removing it / changing it to something that is actively maintained?

  4. Why are you on 4.19?

(Those are the first things that come to mind)

Hi @Fabby Thanks so much for the reply! And Thanks for the info about adapta-gtk-theme, I had no idea it was archived. Was only using it because I liked the colors. Changed to Matcha-aliz

Well Basically it’s a very old computer, probably 8 or 9 years, and I’m concerned about compatibility with newer kernels. But the main reason it’s still on 4.19 is because I don’t have physical access. The Motherboard does not support remote management and If I update the kernel and anything goes wrong at boot time I have no way of reverting the changes.

Call me paranoid, but there’s a little hand in the back of my head that slaps my brain when I think about posting all that information on the internet :grimacing: I know you really can’t help without knowing the system, and I doubt anyone cares enough to worry about hacking my little ole pc, but still makes me feel uncomfortable.

Maybe I can pm that information to you directly?

smartctl command not found…

Okay wow, so something just happened that I’ve never noticed before. So far I’ve only been posting about one computer, but I actually have two Manjaro machines on the network at that location. Both are setup pretty much the same but using slightly different hardware (pc#2 below has a dedicated graphics card and pc#1 is using intel integrated graphics) and both are using 4.19 kernel…

Both machines have been experiencing the Xorg crash, but up until just now I thought they were crashing independent of each other, howerver I just had both of the machines crash at exactly the same time (timestamp is exactly the same down to the second) at 13:26:47.

Really starting to think this might be kernel related…

Execute this:

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --no-host --width

have a look at all the information and then execute this:

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

diff both of them and then you’ll see that --filter takes out all PII (Personally identifiable information) because guess what: we’re in :eu: and we’re very aware of the GDPR.

Sounds like you need a trip up the mountain to the telescope. (which was the case the last time someone who had absolutely no physical access to a machine and asked for my help to get said machine turned on through WOL without said access after it got knocked out by lightning)

It seems the issue was related to nomachine server settings. I had set nomachine server to blank physical screen on connect and lock on disconnect. Not sure if only one of those settings or both together is causing the problem, but disabling both settings seems to have fixed the issue so far…

Also not sure if it’s nomachine causing the issue or if it’s xorg. Will try further testing and see if I can get any more information.
