Touchpad stopped working in xfce

Dear all,

I use Manjaro with xfce for some weeks on my Thinkpad T14 for some months now. The touchpad and the trackpoint worked fine; until today. I already used the famous hint “Have you tried turning it off an on again?”
The trackpoint is working, the touchpad isn’t.

Both input devices are recognised:

xinput -list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2	[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4	[slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=10	[slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ TPPS/2 Elan TrackPoint id=11	[slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3	[master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus id=6	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=7	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button id=8	[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=9	[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ ThinkPad Extra Buttons id=12	[slave keyboard (3)]

But libinput –debug-devices shows only output for the trackpoint. (If you want, I can share the output for the trackpoint at a later post.)

Here are some information about the system:

From my understanding output of lsusbor lspciwouldn’t be of much help, but if you want, I can happily share this with you. An additional external mouse via USB is working as expected.

Thank you in advance

varomanja

have you by accident used the Fn+F combo disabling the touchpad ?

On a Lenovo Legion it is Fn+F10

I don’t know about Xfce specifically but some environments provide a setting disable while typing - could it be as simple as that ?

Some drivers only work with X11 environment, so X11 or Wayland ?

Hi @varomanja,

Maybe I’m blind, but I am unable to find your input devices in your inxi output. Or the USB: section, for that matter. This leads me to think:

  • The command you used doesn’t supply the required info; and/or
  • the output is incomplete for whichever reason.

Therefore, I’m asking you to please return/provide the complete unfiltered, unchanged output of:

inxi -ev8

I just tested this on my computer and it does, indeed, provide the info.

Also, please do provide the output for:

lsusb

In xorg.0.logI found a “ignoring this device”.
Perhaps the full log is usefull:

It doesn’t seem listed in either lsusb nor inxi output. Have you tested in a Live environment, perhaps?

X11 or Wayland?

X11 (checked via loginctl).

xfce4-mouse-settingsshow both trackpoint AND touchpad as enabled (via the slider).

A live usb is a very good idea. To be sure it is not a hardware problem.

So what did you do today ?

I added yesterday, just to be sure…

I installed xinput to create some insight after the problem arose.

If it didn’t change anything - you should remove it.

As you say it has become an issue overnight - so to speak - I it could be an error in one of the xfce xml configuration files.

I am not super familiar with xfce so I don’t know specifically which configurations apply.

In my experience a normal functional system does not loose trackpad overnight.

Something must have caused it - you just have to retrace your steps - the package pacmanlogviewer is a great tool for filtering the log - much better than my amateurish grep.

Why did you install xorg input?

Your bios:
LENOVO v: R1BET65W (Version 1.34 ) date: 06/17/2021

LVFS result:
Lenovo (ThinkPad) ThinkPad T14/P14s Gen 1 AMD
Lenovo ThinkPad T14/P14s Gen 1 AMD System Firmware R1BET83W, Version 1.52

lenovo support:
T14 Gen 1 (type 20UD, 20UE) Laptop (ThinkPad) - Type 20UE
BIOS Update (Bootable CD) 46.36 MB Version 1.53 06 Nov 2025

More info:

Is fwupd or gnome-firmware installed? - if not, do it. It is in manjaro repos.
info:

Lenovo thinkpads have longtime firmware support. Why don’t you take advantage of it? That’s why people buy thinkpads and pay the extra.

Thank you, @banjo for your recommendation of upgrading the firmware.

Of course, this cannot be the root cause of the problem, but it solved it for me.

Thank you, @linux-aarhus for your recommendation of pacmanlogviewer.
With this tool (of course I could have used the log file itself) I found, that I installed some firmware days ago (to get rid of warnings during boot). Presumably I did not boot right after the install.
So the problem showed up late.
And that is a good root cause for the problem, that was solved by upgrading the firmware.

I installed xorg-input to check, if the touchpad is recognised by X11.
