Thunderbolt 3-monitor adapter

I’m having issues making my thunderbolt 3-monitor adapter work. The monitor itself is detected and it tries to resize the desktop but the video output is garbled. How may I debug this problem?

I cannot help you, but you are more likely to get good help if you:

Thanks for the heads up. There you go.

I’m sorry, I can’t tell you the solution.

Is this your Thunderbold3-monitor adapter?

Card-2: NVIDIA GP107M [GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile] driver: N/A bus ID: 01:00.0

Maybe the following command will give you further information.

Get current driver

mhwd -li

List available drivers for your hardware

mhwd -l

That was really poorly thought of me. The device wasn’t plugged in. But I do not think it changes the output, though.

No this is a dual card laptop. I don’t think it shows up in the lists I posted. Is there a lsusb for thunderbolt?

And a screenshot: as you can see it’s garbled and falls back to mirroring.

Just to report I tried GNOME and has the same behavior.

Does it work well with two monitors?
It seems the second GPU (nvidia) is not used at all. Is this intentional?
Have you tried the hybrid-bumblebee driver, or PRIME?
Before creating custom config files, maybe you could try kernel 4.16 if this is an option.

Currently xrandr seems to find and use the monitors, so either the frame buffer capabilities cannot handle, or some specific instruction to Xorg and/or xrandr would help.
What is the experience with the Plasma Monitor Settings? What is happening when you try to clone one monitor to another? Try to have a pair of cloned outputs plus one different to see if this is possible via GUI.

So after a lot of fiddling I finally got it to work. It’s related to OpenG (either 2.0 or 3.1)L. If I enable XRender it works!

Just to be thorough.

Does it work well with two monitors?
Yes.

It seems the second GPU (nvidia) is not used at all. Is this intentional?

Yes. For my day to day I do not use it. I plan to try using it later but it seems this particular laptop has issues with newer stable drivers and require beta drivers. I’ll try later.

Have you tried the hybrid-bumblebee driver, or PRIME?
No.

Before creating custom config files, maybe you could try kernel 4.16 if this is an option.

Actually I bit the bullet and I’m running 4.16 at the moment! it reports an ACPI problem I do not know how to debug but works for now.

Thanks for the help. I’ll open a bug report upstream against KWin.
