Can't run dual external monitors @1440p Dell XPS 13 7390

Hi.

I’m trying to run two external monitors at 2560x1440@60hz with an adapter.

Previously I ran this exact setup in Ubuntu 20.04 and it worked fine so it can’t be a hardware issue.

I can run the screens at 1080p or one at a time at 1440p. I can’t even run one of them at 1080p and the other at 1440p.

My guess is it’s a driver issue. I’m running the xf86-video-intel driver. And I’ve tried this using the 5.4, 5.9 and 5.10 kernels.

Is anything in the Xorg or kernel logs that might be relevant? Have you tried the modesetting Xorg driver? Have you tried a Wayland compositor?

Wayland is not an option for two reasons, it’s alpha grade software that lacks many features and I’m running DWM which doesn’t support Wayland.

This is from the Xorg log when I remove xf86-video-intel driver and use the modeset driver:

I’d assume these are the problems. It seems there is not enough video ram or something similar, which is odd, because if that really is the problem, then I cannot imagine how it worked on Ubuntu. In any case, can you start journalctl -f, and then see if anything relevant is printed when you try to connect the monitors/set the resolution. If you have time to try an Ubuntu live session to see if it works there, then please also post the output of xrandr -q and inxi -Fazy from there.

I have no idea why it worked on Ubuntu. But I did try with a different adapter now and got it working. I’m just going to use that one and leave it at that. A bit odd but since I got it working now I’m happy with that.
