Totally in the same boat as JD. However, it’s possible to handle evdev events from libinput yourself and develop a true one finger scroll. I also added palm detection, grabbing the cursor (to stop it from moving while scrolling) and smooth slow scrolling. Works for me just as well as it used to with X11 and properly configured synclient.
