KERNELS!!!

4.19rc8 introduces BFQ as a built-in scheduler. CFQ is still default as BFQ causes panics on some systems.

Is x32-testing ready to be moved to x32-stable?

This will inform the snap process; there is no set threshold.

Please vote on the “is it ready yet?” poll but only when you feel this set is tested enough, and has a sufficient number of changes compared to x32-stable. Do keep in mind that x32-stable updates should be less frequent than x32-testing so not every testing update set should need to be moved over.

  • No or Not yet
  • Yes, x32-testing should be snapped to x32-stable at this point

Kernel 4.19rc8 and some more upstream rebuilds.

4.19rc8 adds BFQ as a scheduler. I’ve set it as default (as opposed to CFQ) so let me know what happens.

4.19-rc8 (BFQ) boots fine on my Cinnamon baytrail 2-in-1, but it hangs on shutdown at kvm: exiting hardware virtualization. Adding elevator=cfg to the kernel args allows normal boot but also hangs on shutdown at the same place. My custom 4.18 still boots and shuts down fine (CFQ), so today’s other updates are in the clear (probably.) I’ll update my custom 4.19 to rc8 and compare shutdowns, tonight.

#7

I note that Phil has just pushed 4.19rc8.1017 to x86_64 unstable so there may be some config changes, or that extra bump fixed some things.

#8

I’ll keep an eye out for the next update. In the mean time, I’ll “play” with my custom 4.19, in case I stumble onto something. My debian 4.19-rc8 (CFQ) has been behaving fine for a couple days…

#9

My Manjaro custom 4.19-rc8 (CFQ) boots and shuts down normally. I have philm’s updated PKGBUILD. Maybe another rebuild would be sufficient to fix my kvm shutdown hang in the official 4.19-rc8 kernel ??

The difference seems to be removing

0001-i2c-hid-override-HID-descriptors-for-certain-devices.patch

and picking up some newer mainline commits in the kernel, as you said. My kernel does not have that hid-override patch, and has the newer commits included. The config hasn’t changed in a week. I saw another thread that mentioned a 4.19-rc8 regression when fixing a synaptic touchpad issue (the hid-override patch I’ll bet.)

OK, let’s see:

Thank you. I grabbed the 4.19 from unstable. It boots and shuts down normally. :tada: Now I’ll leave it running to see if I can detect a difference with BFQ!

Is this version supposed to show the manufacturer’s logo during boot? I’m not seeing it, but I’m OK with that!

#12

IIRC that’s something put in place on new x86_64 installations (so you have to configure it for existing installations).

If I ever get round to updating the i686 installer it might work on that too…

Must remember to create an OSDN account so I can get upload access…

#13

The logo is perhaps the lowest priority. It makes sense for the bladebook, but my relict doesn’t need to remind me who made it! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

#14

Latest 4.19 kernel is crashing on startup with core dumping…4.14 & 4.4 startup fine…
4.19rc8.1017.gc343db4-1 is the culprit!

#15

Just to verify, did 4.19rc8.1016 boot correctly?

#16

No sir…core dump on startup.

#17

What about 4.19rc7? That was the version before BFQ as default scheduler - you can verify that’s the issue with the GRUB boot option elevator=cfq.

#18

The last version worked … we had issues with BFQ about a year ago with 4.14 & @philm fixed it…I’ll try it with the GRUB boot option elevator=cfq .

#19

That’t the issue…crashes with BFQ…so…cfq works.

#20

OK, so the next question is how Phil fixed BFQ, or whether the fix was just to remove it as the default…

I’ll rebuild 4.19rc8.1017 with CFQ as default in the meantime. Panicing kernels aren’t good.
