PHP 8.2 update and introduction of legacy branch

2023-01-13 - Pierre Schmitz

The php packages have been updated to the latest version 8.2. In addition to this, a new set of php-legacy packages have been introduced. These will follow the oldest but still actively supported PHP branch. This enables users to install the latest version but also introduces the option to use third party applications that might rely on an older version. Both branches will be kept up to date following our rolling release model. php and php-legacy can be installed at the same time as the latter uses a -legacy suffix for its binaries and configuration files.

In addition to this, the php7 packages have been removed as they reached end of life. The imap extension will no longer be provided as it relies on the c-client library which has been abandoned for many years.

Some games like Dota 2 are freezing

The issue is caused by update libx11 18.3-4
The solution: Upgrade to libx11 18.3-5

Some games like Dota 2 crash when using Gnome Wayland and switching workspace by pressing alt and tab

The issue is caused by libx11 18.3
The solution: Downgrade to libx11 18.2

See the report: [Linux] Dota 2 crashes on alt tab or workspace switching. · Issue #2231 · ValveSoftware/Dota-2 · GitHub

VLC crashes when playing a video file

It looks like there has been a regression introduced with the new version of libva (2.17.0), which is used by VLC media player. If you get the following error when executing vlc in a terminal:

libva error: vaGetDriverNameByIndex() failed with unknown libva error, driver_name = (null)

you may try to change the Output option in Preferences > Video to VDPAU output instead of Automatic (or whatever value it had been set to before).

Downgrading the libva package from 2.17.0-1 to 2.16.0-1 may also work, but it is a more short-term workaround that should not be kept for too long, as sooner or later, the older package won’t be compatible with the other packages. Consider to do the solution above first.

pacman-mirrors was temporarily renamed to manjaro-mirrors (the changes were reverted)

This was done to avoid confusion with an AUR / WSL package with the same name and avoid possible breakage. It should be a seamless transition.

XFCE becomes unusable if libxfce4ui-nocsd is still installed

So far XFCE Classic project hasn’t updated yet to 4.18 series. We pushed 4.17.0 version of the package, but don’t know if that helps in that situation. python-cairo 1.23.0-2 update requires manual intervention

The python-cairo package prior to version 1.23.0-2 was missing the compiled python module. This has been fixed in 1.23.0-2, so the upgrade will need to overwrite the untracked pyc file that was created. If you receive this error

python-cairo: /usr/lib/python3.10/site-packages/cairo/__pycache__/__init__.cpython-310.pyc exists in filesystem

when updating, use

pacman -Syu --overwrite /usr/lib/python3.10/site-packages/cairo/__pycache__/\*

to perform the upgrade.

Removing python2 from the repositories

2022-09-23 - Jelle van der Waa

Python 2 went end of life January 2020. Since then we have been actively cutting down the number of projects depending on python2 in our repositories, and we have finally been able to drop it from our distribution. If you still have python2 installed on your system consider removing it and any python2 package.

If you still require the python2 package you can keep it around, but please be aware that there will be no security updates. If you need a patched package please consult the AUR, or use an unofficial user repository.*

electron12, electron13, electron14 & electron16 have been dropped to the AUR

Unsupported Electron packages have been dropped from the official repos to the AUR. They no longer receive security updates and nothing in the repos depend on them.

If you have AUR packages depending on those versions, install the binary version from the AUR to replace them; i.e., electron16-bin.

See FS#75490 - electron12, electron13, electron14, electron16 are unsupported and vulnerable packages

End of Support for 15.x.y and 16.x.y

Electron 15.x.y and 16.x.y has reached end-of-support. As per Electron’s new 8-week cadence, we were supporting the latest four versions of Electron until May 2022. With this Electron 19 release, we’ll return to supporting the latest three major versions, as well as the alpha, beta, and nightly releases.

Glibc 2.36 update will break EasyAntiCheat within Proton (should be fixed with glibc 2.36-2)

Temporary workaround for now is to use the flatpak version of steam:

sudo pacman -S flatpak --needed --noconfirm
sudo flatpak install com.valvesoftware.Steam -y

You can use flatseal (another flatpak app) to grant it access to your existing game library so you don’t have to re-download your games (add the game library install path under “Other files” under “Filesystem”).

sudo flatpak install com.github.tchx84.Flatseal -y

For advanced users (not recommended by us): patched glibc and lib32-glibc are available here. They remove the commit that broke EAC.

Locale file changes

C.UTF8 locale is now included in glibc:

Credits @diabonas for this change. Systemd wants us to include C.UTF8 by default and it seems the locale may be in included by glibc upstream in the future. To fix building and avoid nasty fixing in devtools, we include the locale in the package. See systemd/systemd#23252 (comment) FS#74864 : [systemd] >= 251 breaks devtools' locale

There is a pacsave for /etc/locale.conf as it has been removed from the filesystem package.

UPDATE: With filesystem 2022.06.08-2, it will automatically restore /etc/locale.conf if it did not already exist.
Uploading: image.png…

There is a pacnew for /etc/locale.gen. Please review it and regenerate your locale if necessary.

Likely upstream kernel problem with the in-kernel AMD radeon driver
I have two daisy-chained DisplayPort monitors connected to AMD Radeon 6000 series hardware. The daisy-chained monitor remains blank in Wayland and Xorg sessions.
Affected are kernels 6.1.3 and 6.1.6 as well as 6.0.19

Fall-back to kernel 5.15 LTS resolves the issue.

there are again many patches for AMD in queue: kernel/git/stable/stable-queue.git - Linux kernel stable patch queue

Try the 6.2 rc kernels, this solves many problems for my AMD setup.

… only if you know what you have to do if some thing breaks your system. I recommend trying the RC Kernel in isolated environments.

And use Timeshift before committing system-break.
Hopefully not after…

After this update I eventually noticed that smplayer (22.7.0-2)/mpv (1:0.35.0-4) combo failed playing and responding properly.

Investigation revealed the issue was caused by firejail (0.9.70-4) → firejail (0.9.72-1) upgrade.

Issue resolved by reverting to firejail (0.9.70-4).

Haven’t yet tested if this is a result of possible changed firejail profiles or something else.

“sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux62” is an addiditve operation so the rollback procedure is easy.
And since the user is using a testing branch of a linux distribution the user is aware of risks.

I’d everything went smoothly, but element keeps logging me out probably just a coincidence.

Update went smoothly, did not notice anything strange.

I use mpv-git and smplayer from standard repo, no problems after update…

Thanks, I do not run mpv-git.

I was able to recreate the problem in firejail (0.9.70-4).

There exists 2 changes between versions of the smplayer.profile.:
• 9.70 includes “shell none” and lacks “restrict-namespaces”
• 9.72 includes “restrict-namespaces” and lacks “shell none”

Swapping profiles or testing modified options between smplayer.profile versions caused bad behavior in smplayer/mpv.

For now I’ll just continue to run firejail (0.9.70-4) as I can’t quite figure this one out.

Fixed:

I forgot that long ago I’d manually added an mpv profile into /etc/apparmor.d.

Apparently this interfered with smplayer/mpv when running firejail (0.9.72-1), but not when running the previous firejail version. After deleting the apparmor.d mpv profile smplayer/mpv then ran normally under firejail (0.9.72-1).

…my bad

I’ve started experiencing a problem where I won’t even reach a graphical login screen, actually no login screen at all over 50% of the time. Just black screens on all my monitors after the latest update on testing. Just now had to force shut down the system via power button and turn on again multiple times before it would even show me the login screens.

Used to have a problem for a couple of months last year where after login it would just bring up nothing but a black screen but at least it was possible to alt+f3 or alt+f4 and

dbus-run-session
startplasma-wayland

and/or

sudo service sddmrestart

But with this update cycle that doesn’t even seem to be an option.

edit: aaaand a midsession crash too.

edit 2: Since it might be relevant, Ryzen 5 1600 and RX 6600 XT.
