Changes made to Grub 2.04-6

Due to some bugs with the Fedora patches in regard of BTRFS we are using now the Ubuntu approach to hide the menu via GRUB_TIMEOUT.

These are the current options to style the timeout:

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=countdown
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu

You may want to double-check your settings in /etc/default/grub

We also provide a new package called grub-vanilla. Learn more about it here.

Thunderbird 68.0 disabled my extensions!

Thunderbird 68 changes the way extensions work in line with Firefox 68. This will mean incompatible extensions are disabled.

The Thunderbird developers have made it as easy as possible for extensions developers to update the extensions to get them working again.

However, it will take time for extensions to 1) be updated and 2) make their way onto AMO for download.

You have two basic choices:

  1. Add IgnorePkg = thunderbird to your /etc/pacman.conf until your "critical" extension is updated
  2. Keep checking for updates for your "critical" extension, and possibly pester the developer to update it

Option 2 is the more proactive.

pip behaves differently

pip now includes by default the --user flag for all operations.

Install noto-fonts-cjk or another font of your choice. The problem seems related to a ttf-droid update.

libbloom>=1.6-2 update requires manual intervention

(Taken from Arch Linux website, 2019-07-11 by Felix Yan. Source: https://www.archlinux.org/news/libbloom16-2-update-requires-manual-intervention/)

The libbloom package prior to version 1.6-2 was missing a soname link. This has been fixed in 1.6-2, so the upgrade will need to overwrite the untracked soname link created by ldconfig. If you get an error

libbloom: /usr/lib/libbloom.so.1 exists in filesystem

when updating, use

pacman -Suy --overwrite usr/lib/libbloom.so.1

to perform the upgrade.

tensorflow>=1.14.0-5 update requires manual intervention

From Konstantin Gizdov on August 20, 2019

The tensorflow packages prior to version 1.14.0-5 were missing some soname links. This has been fixed in 1.14.0-5, so the upgrade will need to overwrite the untracked soname links created by ldconfig. If you get an errors like so.

tensorflow: /usr/lib/libtensorflow.so.1 exists in filesystem
tensorflow: /usr/lib/libtensorflow_cc.so.1 exists in filesystem
tensorflow: /usr/lib/libtensorflow_framework.so.1 exists in filesystem

when updating, use

pacman -Suy --overwrite=usr/lib/libtensorflow.so.1,usr/lib/libtensorflow_cc.so.1,usr/lib/libtensorflow_framework.so.1

to perform the upgrade.

You people are amazing! Keep up the good work!

No issues right now, ill keep my eyes out for anything :smiley:

The update was completed without apparent issue (in TTY 2), but when I rebooted I got a full black screen after the Grub and before the KDE login page.
I have try 2 kernels, 5.2 and 4.19, same behavior.
The only way I can boot is while in the Grub, to select the "Fallback Initframs" option.
Any clue how to repair this ?
EDIT: My bad... seems I can boot with regular Kernel 5.2 It is the 4.19 which won't boot...
EDIT2: New Kernel 5.3-rc7 gives me also the black screen, only 5.2 allow me to get to the login screen.
EDIT3: On another laptop I can boot with either of the 4.19, 5.2 or 5.3 kernel without issue. So it should be something specific to my hardware (the installation is brand new, I did it 2 weeks ago with the last KDE-RC8 release). Still... if anybody have a suggestion how to debug this I would greatly appreciate.

Still updating my Demon Machines™ but I decided to give FreeOffice another shot with the addition of dark mode and ODT support.

Interestingly, it seems they buried the headline as I've never registered with SoftMaker but there is no registration screen for me now.
Which is a nice change.

I'll be giving it a nice long try now.

:grin:

The same thing happened to me, at first.

I began with 5.2. Trying several times, I got only the black screen.

I switched to 4.19, and this time I booted successfully.

Oddly, switching back again to 5.2, I am now booting successfully.

I experienced this problem only with KDE. With Xfce, I booted with 5.2 successfully the first time. In both cases, Manjaro is installed in a VM.

Rebooted fine on my end

I booted to a black screen on KDE as well. Switching to 5.3-rc7 fixed it for me, 5.1 and 5.2 did not work.

@supra, @pierrep56, time to check logs with journalctl --no-pager --no-hostname -xb -1 -p3

The registration screen appears after a few days :wink: you will still need a key (sent to your email adress)

My Unstable & Testing KDE+Cinnamon VMs both updated, rebooted, & logged-in just fine. All seems well with them at the desktop/s. Kernel 5.2.13.

Tomorrow i'll do the update to my real Testing KDE+Cinnamon Tower, so i hope that'll also be ok.

Less wind today [oh, the weather outside is calmer, too :wink:], so did the real update. All good, but...

I've only just now rebooted Tower, following successful application of the Testing Update, but... i initially attempted it in Yakuake, with pamac-cli. It simply sat there, smirking at me, doing nothing, which has been a common pattern lately for me. I'm pretty much over it now. I killed it, then logged out, toggled into tty, & did it there the conventional pacman way... perfectly fine sans any silliness.

IMO pamac-cli seems to have a persistent bug/s. It is nowadays far less reliable for me than initially [eg, not proceeding with updates has become common for it]. Furthermore, it has another nasty habit of reporting the wrong package repo info, eg, see Ksysguard not show cpu and network usage

I have the same issue with booting to a black screen with KDE. My laptop is attached to a docking station. If I remove it, it boots just fine.

Here is my journalctl

No black screen on either of my machines after update. Admittedly I updated the laptop from a different tty to the one KDE desktop started in. The desktop I did not bother doing that for, I am running Kernel 5.3 on both.

EDIT - I've removed the exclude from pacman.conf and upgraded to the buntu grub build now on my desktop. Copied across the commands from my existing grub to grub.pacnew and saved it over the top of grub. All is well so I will do the same to the notebook later.

Did update in tty. Everything fine! Kernel 5.2 booted well. Desktop KDE.

I can't find any in my logs, all looks okay

I got this dependency issue:

:: Starting full system upgrade...
resolving dependencies...
looking for conflicting packages...
:: mypaint and libmypaint are in conflict. Remove libmypaint? [y/N] y
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: removing libmypaint breaks dependency 'libmypaint' required by gimp
:: removing libmypaint breaks dependency 'libmypaint' required by mypaint-brushes
:: removing libmypaint breaks dependency 'libmypaint<2' required by mypaint-brushes1

temporary solution: uninstall mypaint.
