Pulseaudio muting external DAC 2nd output

Hi. I’ve been setting up a media center with manjaro and am running into some issues.

The hardware setup for audio is PC → USB connection to external DAC (Mayflower ARC mk1) → RCA → Speakers.

The problem I’m having is pulseaudio seems to get confused between outputs and perhaps mute the wrong thing. On the arch wiki / pulseaudio troubleshooting page, I found a sort-of fix:

$ amixer -D pulse sset Master toggle
$ pamixer -u

So sometimes, that will work, if I follow a specific order of operations(Turn off DAC; pulse switches to the unused HDMI output from GPU, I can see the output to that working in pauvcontrol) Turn on DAC. Use the two commands above, then in pauvcontrol switch outputs from HDMI back to DAC. Sometimes it doesn’t work but sometimes it does, which seems key. When I say doesn’t work, I mean everything I check (pamixer -u OR alsamixer -c 1 and unmute) confirms the devices are unmuted and sound should be playing, but it doesn’t work. Headphone output from the DAC seems to work just fine. Is there more to the amixer -D pulse sset Master toggle command?

When it is working, if I use alsamixer -c 1 and then press M twice to mute/unmute the device, sound remains off even though the device is unmuted and was literally just working.

I also note there’s no auto-mute setting in amixer and

$ amixer -c 1 sset "Auto-Mute Mode" Disabled

returns “amixer: Unable to find simple control ‘Auto-Mute Mode’,0”

So what I need help with, is either finding out a bulletproof way to solve the mute issue (Can pulseaudio just never mute any output under any circumstance?) OR, find some alternate way to configure this system’s sounds (Can you hardwire an output perhaps? Is there a way to setup an asoundrc alsa config to force the bitrate/device? Looking over arch wiki on alsa seems daunting). I had a brief stab at installing pipewire but that didn’t seem to work, but I also had little clue as to what I was actually doing.

One other thing I have done is create a daemon.conf file for pulseaudio in ~/.config/pulse/ to set the output sample rate to 48000 and 96000, 24bit, as these are the only output modes supported by the DAC. When I am playing audio in firefox, if I run pacmd list-sink-inputs it mentions using float32le 48000 instead of float24le, but that’s before sampling, right? I haven’t confirmed if that is different in the rare instances sound is working.

If I run speaker-test -c 2 I get:

speaker-test 1.2.5.1

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 96 to 1048576
Period size range from 32 to 349526
Using max buffer size 1048576
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 262144
was set buffer_size = 1048576
0 - Front Left
1 - Front Right
Time per period = 10.942234
0 - Front Left
^C 1 - Front Right

Which is wrong, it should be S24_LE… any idea where this might be defined if not the ~/.config/pulse/daemon.conf? [Edit: nvm, output here is identical when sound is magically working, so it’s not an issue with it being s16le]

I do not appear to have an /etc/asound.conf file.

Welcome to Manjaro forum

You should consider updating system BIOS
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/precision-t3600/drivers

USB audio devices usually do not have an Auto-Mute Mode
This feature is typically found on an onboard analog audio codecs for muting built-in speakers when a headphone jack is plugged in

For Arch distributions, the ALSA configuration to use PulseAudio as default sound server is provided by package pulseaudio-alsa . Configuration file /etc/alsa/conf.d/99-pulseaudio-default.conf
PulseAudio/Back-end configuration/ALSA - ArchWiki

first line of response to command pulseaudio --dump-conf will confirm the location of configuration file daemon.conf in use

speaker-test command generates audio test tones in ALSA. Sample rate can be specified using command option -r or --rate
(see man speaker-test for details of command options)

System data is showing both PulseAudio and Pipewire servers are running

           Sound Server-3: PulseAudio v: 15.0 running: yes
           Sound Server-4: PipeWire v: 0.3.38 running: yes

If you want to continue using PulseAudio, Pipewire service should be disabled

systemctl --user disable --now pipewire.socket pipewire.service && systemctl --user mask pipewire.socket

PulseAudio data shows the sink-input for Firefox is not muted – muted: no
But the sink-input appears to be corked – flags: START_CORKED

The audio stream might have been corked by old settings in PulseAudio stream-volumes database
I suggest you clear PulseAudio databases and cookie in user home folder to clear any old user settings

rm ~/.config/pulse/cookie ~/.config/pulse/*.tdb

and reboot system to ensure all old user preferences are unloaded and PulseAudio can create new database files

If PulseAudio sink-input(s) are still shown as corked, use this command to temporarily remove PulseAudio module module-role-cork

pacmd unload module module-role-cork

if that works to uncork audio streams the module can be permanently disabled from loading by commenting out the load command in /etc/pulse/default.pa
(or remove the module from ~/.config/pulse/default.pa if a custom user configuration is in use)

Hey, thanks so much for your reply. I updated bios and removed pipewire. Also updated kernel to 5.14, no luck.

Pulseaudio --dump-conf confirms it is using the correct config in my user config folder:

(note i’ve tried avoid-resampling true and false, doesn’t seem to matter; I’ve had sound working either way)

I had to change pacmd unload module module-role-cork to pacmd unload-module module-role-cork

& I had to use puleaudio -k, otherwise the state stayed as CORKED
and now when I run youtube in firefox, I get

        flags: START_CORKED
        state: RUNNING

but the audio is still muted sometimes despite the RUNNING state. Any suggestions to further look into this CORKED state? Sometimes it seems touching volume adjustments puts me in the soundless state, sometimes volume adjustment works as expected.

I will try and get it in a working state, and check sink-input again to see what the corked state is.
edit: Ok when working, flags/state is as above, START_CORKED and RUNNING. Since amixer -D pulse sset Master toggle is key to getting it working, along with turning the dac on/off and reselecting the output device, is there any logs I can check while the sound is working to see what is the key change? I don’t really understand what the sset Master toggle is doing.

Another discovery: if I run alsamixer, the ‘item’ is listed as Master. Adjusting the volume affects the output sound volume. Muting it breaks the audio (ie unmute says it unmutes, but no sound comes from the speakers). If I run alsamixer -c 1 (which is the DAC), adjusting the volume does nothing, but muting also breaks sound. Muting did not seem to set either state to CORKED now, but still the issue persists. I can reliably fix it now by making sure when I run amixer -D pulse sset Master toggle, the output includes ON not OFF, then turn off/on dac, reslect output as it reverts to HDMI output, and play. Boom it works. I just need to get that to happen always.

Data for source-outputs is not helpful for showing information about PulseAudio sinks

I suggest you check PulseAudio sink devices for audio playback

pacmd list-sinks

Previous data for sink-inputs showed audio was not muted in PulseAudio
PulseAudio log data only shows 4 occurrences of ‘Mute’:

Line 435 & 487 – I: [pulseaudio] alsa-sink.c: Using hardware mute control.

Line 630 & 631 – I: [pulseaudio] module-stream-restore.c: Storing volume/mute for stream sink-input-by-application-name:Firefox.

The only place audio appears to have been muted is in the hardware device and not PulseAudio

I suggest you check if USB device has any software controls in ALSA to mute/unmute audio

amixer --card=2

But if this USB device only has hardware controls there might not be any software controls in ALSA

Line 516 shows that module-role-cork is still being loaded, so I suspect that may be still be a problem with the sink being corked rather than muted

Check PulseAudio modules currently loaded with this command

Hey, thanks again for looking into this. I haven’t made any progress myself this week.

The DAC auto-detects when headphones are plugged in/out and switches the output based on that. There’s no physical output switch on the device. I could try plugging in headphones while running pulseaudio -v and see if that gives any clues…?

amixer --card=1

It does not look like the cork module is being loaded anymore:

However, I can confirm that while sound is working, if I pause youtube, pacmd list-sink-inputs will say the sink state is CORKED and not RUNNING.

I still think this is solvable, the key has to be finding what to query when the device is working and not working, then figuring out why
amixer -D pulse sset Master toggle

sometimes fixes it after turning the DAC off/on. Like the sequence needs to be correct. And sometimes it will work on a fresh boot. The fact that it doesn’t ever work after muting the device seems key. I was perhaps thinking of commenting out more modules in default.pa just to see what happens. I may also try 5.15 kernel too.

The amixer command is only turning off/on the virtual audio controls for PulseAudio and would not affect hardware

If amixer command confirms PulseAudio ‘Master’ is muted ( [off] ), command pactl list-sinks will also show the sink output to ALSA is Mute: yes
If amixer command confirms PulseAudio ‘Master’ is muted ( [on] ), command pactl list-sinks will also show the sink output to ALSA is Mute: no

if I pause youtube, pacmd list-sink-inputs will say the sink state is CORKED and not RUNNING.

If you pause a video in a browser, PulseAudio sink-input would not show as muted
but GUI controls pavucontrol --tab=1 would show the Firefox stream level set to Silence 0%
The sink-input is shown as muted if the mute button for Firefox stream is clicked in PulseAudio Playback controls

PulseAudio log data has 159 occurrences of the word ‘error’

I can see another series of errors relating to the USB DAC that do not make sense
3 occurrences of the same message about sample format for USB analog and digital outputs

alsa-util.c: Device front:1 doesn't support sample format s24le, changed to s16le.
alsa-util.c: Device iec958:1 doesn't support sample format s24le, changed to s16le

I could not find manufacturer specifications for this device, but I did find the old Tek Syndicate youtube launch video from 2017 and some reviews
This device should support bit depth of 16 or 24 bits and sample rates of 44.1 kHz to 96 kHz

I suspect there is a hardware problem with this USB device and suggest:

  • check USB cable connection physically
  • check ALSA information for hardware errors
sudo alsa-info.sh --upload
1 Like

This is the owners manual for the DAC, page 10 states the 24/48000 or 24/96000 bitrate, over USB. Optical supports more formats including 16bit.

To be clear I’m unsure what exact mechanism is causing the mute/unmite behaviour. I’m assuming if I were to run this setup on windows it would work fine.

Here is an initial alsa-info, I will check again later if this differs when the system is in a muted state (I believe the sound was working when I ran this)

So those alsa-util.c errors you mention might be related to the microphone? The capture format for the mic is set to Format: S16_LE

As for iec958, that seems to be related only to the HDMI audio from the GPU. The alsa log shows a lot of controllers for the gpu, not sure if that’s normal.
