Everyday my desktop will freeze. I can move my mouse, but none of the UI elements are intractable. I’ve reinstalled Manjaro multiple times so it might be my hardware. It’s happened on multiple kernels as well, currently I’m on 5.8, using NVIDIA Driver 455.28. The only current solution I have is to go to a tty terminal and run a restart script that has the following parameters:

#!/bin/bash
killall xfce4-panel
xfce4-panel
xfwm4 --replace &

After running that, my desktop starts to work after a few minutes.

Try this

And if @bogdancovaciu 's excellent advice doesn’t help, downgrade to the 440 series as your GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER is supported by that driver and the 55x series has some serious bugs outstanding…

:+1:

I switched to 5.9-rt and still get the issues, so I’m oing to go with @Fabby and try the 440 series GPU. I will also look into using a swapfile instead of a swap partition.

Also another thing is I do have haveged installed and enabled. I now added the swapfile instead of the partition, I tried installing nvidia 440xx but it’s not available for linux kernel 59, so I went with 450xx.

Edit: Still happening on 450xx. I went to tty and one by one killed some processes. Chromium, xfwm4, retroarch, and then thunar. After killing thunar my desktop started functioning again, could just be timing, as eventually it starts working again. I could try another file manager and see if the issue persists.

5.9 and nVidia is a bad combination. This is what I’m running:

fab-user@fab-manjaro:/usr/lib/systemd/system
$ uname --kernel-release
5.8.16-2-MANJARO
fab-user@fab-manjaro:/usr/lib/systemd/system
$ mhwd --listinstalled

P.S Have a look at my profile…

I tried your same configuration. It still happens on 440xx with kernel 5.8.
At this point I’m not sure what to do so I might just reinstall manjaro and try the KDE flavor, or switch to Arch.

I’ve got comparable hardware to you and I’m very happy with KDE, but then, I’m a tinkerer and have 6 desktops, Wobbly windows, magic lamp minimize and restore, transparent Konsole and Conky windows, …

:grin:
