As the title says I’m having problems playing DVDs with any media player. First I tired VLC and it would automatically try to play the DVD then crash, then mpv, kaffeine, and dragon did the same thing. The error is the same for all of them.

glconv_vaapi_x11 gl error: vaInitialize: unknown libva error

Seems like hardware acceleration is failing.
Usually, and I mean in most cases and even without this particular error, VLC needs to be set to a decent working backend, as its ‘automatic’ is … flaky.
That you tried other players throws this into a question a bit.

Lets take a look at some packages:

pacman -Qs 'libva|vdpau|nvidia'

PS.

This looks like a BIOS in need of updating.

Here’s the output of that command

Uninstalling and then reinstalling VLC should also reinstall many dependencies needed by other multimedia applications.

Uninstall VLC:

sudo pacman -R vlc

Now, we reinstall VLC while also performing an upgrade:

sudo pacman -Syyu vlc

Now, try to play a DVD. This will either work now, or it won’t.

Note that if you see errors related to downgrading ffmpeg, that’s another issue currently being attended to. Cheers

Error persists. Thank you for your help still.

Found, at least, a temporary fix from this thread.

Removing libva-vdpau-driver as shared in the solution works for now.

Remember not to select it in VLC then.

Interesting to note; I’m not experiencing this at all in KDE, stable, v6.1 LTS kernel; system fully updated and current.
