System-wide UI Freeze in KDE Plasma 6

The entire graphical interface periodically freezes without any clear trigger. All UI elements stop responding, except for the mouse cursor, which continues to move. The issue appears randomly during normal system use (approximately once a week). During brief moments when the system “unfreezes”, queued actions execute rapidly, but the freeze returns after ~30 seconds. The problem persists until the system is rebooted.

System Information

  • OS: Manjaro Linux 25.0.10
  • Kernel: 6.12.48-1-MANJARO [64-bit] (actually, the issue persists for several shifts/updates of kernel)
  • Desktop Environment: KDE Plasma 6.3.6
  • Display Server: X11
  • GPU: GeForce RTX 4080
  • NVIDIA Driver: 580.82.09 (proprietary)

I would be grateful for any guidance on identifying the root cause or suggestions for additional logs/debugging steps would be appreciated.

Please provide your system information as described (below) making sure it conforms to forum guidelines for pre-formatted text presentation.

Once that is done, I’m sure someone will help when they are able.

Regards.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit.

Note: By virtue of using the Manjaro forum you acknowledge and agree to follow Rules and Guidelines outlined; so, you really should read them:

Required Reading
Highly Recommended

Work with us, not against us

Be prepared to provide output from commands when asked. It is equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Simply waiting for others to ask you questions can be counter-productive – typically, nobody has a :crystal_ball: at their disposal – instead, please help others to make informed suggestions based on information you provide.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

Suggested inxi command (use either):

inxi -zv8 (short-form)
inxi --filter --verbosity=8 (long-form)
inxi man pages (manual)
Running `inxi` within a `chroot` environment
  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

Welcome to the Manjaro community @DmitryInd

Does the issue also occur if you switch to a Plasma Wayland session?

You can change your Plasma session from X11 to Wayland by selecting the session type at the login screen (Wayland is now KDE’s default for Plasma).

If you have set up autologin to skip the password screen, you can change to a Wayland session by opening System Settings → Colors & Themes → Login Screen (SDDM) → Behavior.

To see if your current session is running on X11 or Wayland, run the following command in a terminal:

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

For those curious about how Wayland differs from X11:

If switching to Wayland doesn’t fix the issue, then more detailed system information may be required (as was just requested by @soundofthunder )

Here is all the additional information about the system that you may need. Unfortunately, I did not record any logs after the errors occurred. I would appreciate it if you could tell me what to look for the next time an error happens.

Among the known errors that are reported on the Internet, I could not find anything like this that has been published and solved in the last 2 years.

Global information:

$ inxi -zv8

Logs can be generated for the previous boot, and those before it by using appropriate parameters. The following provides all information needed, and probably some you’ll never need:

However, please answer firstly the question posed by @scotty65 in post #3:

And what did you find when searching the forum?

Regards.

You could use open drivers matching the kernel.

nvidia-driver-assistant

Your cpu may be undervolted - this will cause freezes.

No, I did not try to reproduce the error in the Plasma Wayland session. Currently, I would prefer to stay on display server x11.

Can you please try that, and report back? The result may help to isolate the issue. As might creating a new User account (for diagnostic purposes) to see if the issue persists.

Please don’t ignore a suggestion because it doesn’t suit you. All information you can provide can potentially help to identify the problem.

Regards.

your bios is from 2022. if you check your manufacturer you’ll see that there is a actual bios from 2025-08-18. you should update your bios before proceeding. this is always a good first step.

There are maybe work arounds which comes in my mind that could help.

Did you try to switch between TTY (Strg+Alt+F4 ) and back to desktop (Strg+Alt+F1)
or Alt+Shift+F12 to reset hardware acceleration from Desktop?

That could probably cure that UI freeze.

Switch from LTS Kernel 6.12 to LTS Kernel 6.6 could also help, or even try the newest Kernel.

Updating your Bios as Olli suggested should be the last possible option and not the first step!

Updating your Bios can lead to a broken Device, if there is made 1 single mistake,
that includes power outage (which can’t be controlled).

Never update your Bios when its not really important! Only for security issue or system instability which can’t be solved in another way.

Maybe offtopic and idk if this problem is related:
Are you a new Linux User? Then i recommend to stay away from BTRFS as far as possible
and use EXT4 instead. If you not aware how to perfectly maintain and setup your BTRFS Partition.
