System stuck at Light Display Manager start

Hi, I recently did a kernel update to 5.9.11-3 and when trying to start that particular instance it stucks loading at the lightmanager load.

The lightmanager log output:

I’m on the video-nvidia-430xx drivers, since those were the only drivers so far that ran fine for me. I had to roll back from 440xx a while back since those weren’t running well on my system.

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 630 (Mobile)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP107M [GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mobile] (rev a1)

Not sure what’s going on there, may be another issue or may just be the driver.

Have you tried 5.4?

Most of the nvidia drivers have been removed, due to nvidia’s shennagins, so 5.9 only has 390xx, 450xx, and 455xx. If you need 430xx you’ll have to use 5.4.

$ pacman -Ss linux59-nvidia
extra/linux59-nvidia-390xx 390.132-6 (linux59-extramodules)
    NVIDIA drivers for linux.
extra/linux59-nvidia-450xx 450.80.02-10 (linux59-extramodules)
    NVIDIA drivers for linux.
extra/linux59-nvidia-455xx 455.45.01-4 (linux59-extramodules)
    NVIDIA drivers for linux.

What’s the output of mhwd -l?

EDIT:

Mhwd -l lists 390, 418, 430, 435, 440, 450 and 455 as well as a bunch of free drivers

Then you could try 390, 450 and 455.

sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia-390xx

For now it may be best to see if 5.4 still works.

I’ve installed 455 now, but the light display manager still fails to start

Please, be aware that kernel 5.8 is EOL and should not be used anymore.

I really should read those thing more often.

EDIT: For confused future readers, I changed the original posts.

Output of the starting attempt with 455xx

Update, 455xx and 450xx don’t work either and the 57 kernel stopped starting too now.

I’m on the phone because the computer doesn’t start and this forum doesn’t allow me to upload images or links from the logs…

First I was mostly just posting to tell you about the driver situation, as I know little about hybrid graphics and I’m not sure what’s going on in the log. I’m also going out soon.

Linux 5.7 and 5.8 are end of life, ie don’t use them, try 5.4 with the 430 driver which you know works.

Eventually I’ll have to go to 59+ though. Just back grading and staying there is not really a solution either

You’re correct, but as far as I know the only solutions are open source drivers or a new laptop. :frowning:

Something may be worked out, presumably there are a lot of people with older cards.

I never got the open source drivers to work either and I wanted to update finally to sth new because the old drivers had some bugs with brave.

Removed 59, reinstalled 430 and I got it to load again. I’d like to get 59+ working though, so I appretiate help with this still

The last log on trying to load things with 450

Auto installing a driver via: sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300

Resulted in:

video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-455xx-prime 2020.10.04 false PCI

Which seems to be working fine now. Thanks to Hm7 on the Manjaro discord for the link.

Not sure if that still works all the same as the previous one. But so far it seems to work.
