System freeze - initiated partial shutdown before freeze on XFCE / LightDM / xfwm4

My system froze again. I had to hold the power button until the pc powered off. It’s been a while since last time it has frozen without being related to hibernate. I was running (borg)backup prior to system update when this happened. It’s about 2 weeks since last time I updated the system.

Looking at the log, makes me wonder if something initiated a shutdown some minutes before the freeze. Maybe that could give a clue to why the system froze?

you should try REISUB before using the power button.

On top of @steanne 's excellent advice, system freezes are notoriously difficult to debug, so please ensure:

  • Your watch / phone’s clock is synchronized with your PC’s clock to the second.
  • Note the exact time of the freeze (to +/- 5 seconds)
  • REISUB
  • Provide the exact time of the freeze (to +/- 5 seconds)
  • Provide an inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
  • Provide a journalctl --system --boot=-1 --since "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS" where MM is one minute before the freeze.

Then we’ll be able to take this further.

Thanks. I’ve now enabled SysRq key, rebooted and tested that it works.

The output of ournalctl --system --boot=-1 --since "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS" is the last 4 lines of the first post. I included more lines as it looks like something was shutting down a few minutes before the freeze. I didn’t note the exact time thou. It could be that those 4 lines are up to 2 minuets before the freeze.

Ctrl+Alt+F1/F2/…/F12 didn’t do anything.

On KDE here so I can’t help you any further, but I’ve edited your title and added a few more tags to attract better experts than me. (Looks like a LightDM issue to me)

:sob:

Thanks.
I reinstalled lightdm* and rebooted. But the message

keeps showing up in the log

Hello, can you give us an update regarding your freeze problem ? Did you find out a solution ? Actually I’m struggling with the same issue on Gnome.
