System doesn't suspend properly

Hi,

My system doesn’t suspend properly after using it a while. For the first, second or even fourth or whatever works without problem but a random attempt (close lid) doesn’t suspend system properly. Hard disk led stays on, fan works loudly and if I open lid, screen doesn’t came up. So I have to press power button long to force it to close.

Don’t take account of zen kernel, I’ve four kernel ( zen 6.4, kernel 6.3, kernel 6.1 and 5.15 ) on system and the issue were triggered after update system to kernel 6.x. Suspend works properly at kernel 5.15 even at ten or more when I try close lid.

I always check journalctl after reboot but it doesn’t give a meaningfull clue about what’s going on. The last entry on the log always is “PM: suspend entry (deep)”. How can I debug this problem?

Please clarify

  • suspend - does not require swap - all in ram

or

  • hibernate - requires swap to write memory to disk

There is a newer BIOS version for your model …

I think all those model from Asus need this in order to wake up from suspend, as this model ASUS Zenbook UX31E - ArchWiki

On the other hand, you might have to do some changes, so please read this Power management/Suspend and hibernate - ArchWiki

suspend which doesn’t require swap.

Are you sure that there is newer BIOS version for my model?

Here is ASUS support page:
https://www.asus.com/supportonly/ux310uq/helpdesk_bios/

There are two models which are UX310UQ and UX310UQK. In fact my model is UX310UQ according to label on PC but I’d used BIOS file of UX310UQK 3 years ago, thought that it was newer and probably there is no difference between two models.

If you select UX310UQ you see Version 305 (2019/06/05) and if you select UX310UQK you see Version 311 (2019/06/05), different versions, but they’ve same date. They probably are same BIOS with different name. It doesn’t matter which one is true does matter? I’ve been using Version 311 (2019/06/05) for 3 years, it didn’t cause any problem up to now. Problem was arisen after kernel update 6.x.

Your model is

the BIOS is

AFAIK the

will not change because i think is part of the model tag.
Do not flash a different BIOS than the one recommended for your exact model.
The one with the red pointer is what your laptop has now

Even tho you might have downloaded it at a latter date.

So BIOS seems uptodate according to ASUS support. As I said before the issue has arisen after kernel update from 5.x to 6.x

I can’t debug the problem because when I close lid system isn’t suspended properly and fan works loudly and I have to force it to shut down. After reboot, journalctl doesn’t give a meaningfull clue.

You can have multiple kernels installed as you know already, so, booting from any of the 5.x LTS kernel is making your laptop to perform as expected?

Yes. Whenever I close lid, system suspends while using kernel 5.x

So, is there any way to debug this issue on kernel 6.x? I can’t even speculate about the issue without any log or footprint. Debug this issue isn’t very easy without right log. Do you have any suggestion?
