/sys/firmware/efi/efivars: unknown filesystem type 'efivars'

Greetings, it’s been such a long time since I posted anything here. Glad to back.

So, this is my problem with Grub (been dealing with it for 3 days without any improvement ):

  • Everytime I boot into Manjaro, I’ll see this error message (the only message in my screen because I’m on Silent Boot):
mount: /sys/firmware/efi/efivars: unknown filesystem type 'efivarfs'.
  • I can still boot into Manjaro though, but on legacy mode because:
➜ efivar -l 10:10:58 PM
efivar: error listing variables: Function not implemented

These are what I did:

  1. Boot into latest Manjaro Live CD (Gnome version), chroot into my Manjaro system and reinstall Grub. This is the whole log:
[manjaro@manjaro-gnome ~]$ lsblk -f

As you can see, I did the modprobe efivarfs and managed to list efivar and everything should be done. But when I boot into Manjaro I still get the same error message and still booted into Legacy mode.

  1. I also tried formatting the whole EFI partition. That’s why my EFI partition is 1GiB (before it was 150MiB). I tried mounting the EFI partition in /boot instead of /boot/efi. (so I can boot using EFISTUB according to Archwiki. This failed so I redo everything because Manjaro prefer /boot/efi instead.

  2. I also tried deleting all my efibootmgr listing and re add it using this command:
➜ sudo efibootmgr --create --disk /dev/sda --part 1 --loader /EFI/manjaro/grubx64.efi --label "Manjaro Grub" --verbose

  3. I also tried copying my manjaro grubx64.efi file to /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi to trick my motherboard UEFI to think that is Windows (I forgot where but I found someone suggesting that in a forum).

  4. I also make sure my motherboard UEFI Settings are checked with only boot to UEFI and secure boot is off.

This is my Grub Command line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet loglevel=3 rd.systemd.show_status=auto rd.udev.log-priority=3 resume=UUID=ad473218-1b76-4faf-a66c-389a92e5f121 threadirqs vt.global_cursor_default=0 nvidia-drm.modeset=1"

I hope somebody can help me with this, although my system is still up and running fine but my OCD just can’t accept that error message and I can’t accept that my system is not booted with UEFI mode
And I know @gohlip is the master of Grub so I’ll just tag you here.

Thanks

Unless he returns from vacation/other business, you have to wait…

Neither do I! This is the main problem. You were trying to make your system UEFI, while booted Live media in Legacy and chrooted. AAMOF some commands you used were totally awkward, your Manjarying power seems faded off :joy:

If your BIOS does not boot in UEFI, how can Manjaro boot in UEFI?

When did this start to happen?? This means, Manjaro is installed as UEFI and booted in Legacy, so it’s not Manjaro’s fault.

In Legacy booting?

I would suggest you check BIOS settings, or update your BIOS if possible.

You said you have enabled silent grub. Can you not make your boot show error messages following the instructions for that? If not, I suggest you disable it, or downgrade grub to see error messages.

Also you have done several things that may or not affect the system.

As a non negotiable 1st step, you have to boot a Manjaro Live Media in UEFI mode. Then, collect info and post it, following the Ultimate Repair Guide for Booting with Grub (URGBG):

Put efivars to the modules section of mkinitcpio.conf and regenerate the kernel image via mkinitcpio -P.

No mate, my system is definitely on UEFI mode, I can assure you that, I even mentioned it in my post, my UEFI Setting is set to boot from UEFI Mode only
Live Media is also booted in UEFI, look into my command log carefully, the efivar -l command failed when I chrooted into my Manjaro install (my fault though because I didn’t do the efivar -l before chroot to show it to you, but I can also assure you that my Live Media is booted in UEFI mode because I disabled legacy boot entirely and I’m in this cycle for 3 days straight )

This happens only recently, and my Manjaro is installed for 3 years already. I don’t know if this happen because something changed in the way the kernel is displaying error like that because I have log level to 3 in my grub command line which will only display anything when critical error is found. I even checked the kernel config of linux-rt kernel and there is indeed CONFIG_EFI_VAR=y so that shouldn’t be because of the kernel.

My motherboard BIOS is updated to the latest version (2016 though because that thing is too old already and probably discontinued by MSI). Secure boot is Off, Legacy boot is disabled, I don’t know if there’s anything else that may cause this?

No, I’m using regular grub, not grub-silent from AUR, the silent boot is only disabling ■■■■ from mkinitcpio and let systemd handle it, and modifying the grub command line. Also Manjaro Live Media is booted in UEFI mode. It listed “UEFI (FAT32) Kingston Data Traveler blablabla” in the boot option

My assumption is: Grub is already installed in UEFI mode, that’s why my MSI motherboard can load the grub (Legacy Boot disabled), but when Grub wants to mount efivarfs, it failed and booted me into legacy mode, that’s why it shows the error. But I just don’t know why.

Thanks for the long answer though mate, yeah my Manjarying power is definitely faded off a lot

Now this, I haven’t tried. I’ll try it out when I got my hands on my system. Thanks Philm, for the countless time

When you do, I suggest you mount /boot/efi before chroot, not sure that’s a problem, though. Why don’t use manjaro-chroot for convenience?..
And watch out of the grub-install command (not mount ).

Confirm you have run pacdiff, as well.

Mounting after chroot is because I followed the Manjaro Wiki. But I don’t think it makes any difference though because I install grub after mounting anyway. I tried Manjaro-chroot too of course,it doesn’t mount /boot/efi by default too.
About that mount grub command, that’s all because of Numlock OFF by default in Live Media. It registered my Numpad 1 keypress as other button when I was typing /dev/sda1. @Chrysostomus please enable Numlock by default

I don’t use pacdiff, what does it do?

It doesn’t fix my problem
And the module name should be efivarfs, not efivars

Which Manjaro ISO version are you using?

When you boot into your live environment if /sys/firmware/efi does not exist then you are Legacy MBR booting.

This is not a grub issue, but a BIOS boot setting issue, usually. Are you 100% sure UEFI booting is enabled?

Do other Linux distro live environments have the same issue or only Manjaro?

Manjaro ISO: Manjaro GNOME Edition (18.0)

When I boot into live environment, /sys/firmware/efi/efivars does exist, I can even list, manage, edit my EFI boot options using efibootmgr in the Live Session. Like I mentioned above, I’m 100% sure I’m on UEFI when I boot into Live Media because I “Disable Legacy Boot” in my motherboard UEFI Settings (MSI Z97Gaming 9 AC). And my system is not just installed recently. I’m using this same Manjaro install and this same machine for almost 3 years already. And my booting screen was always clean until recently.

That’s what I’m thinking too. I never said it was Grub issue, and I just don’t know what is causing this like I mentioned here:

I just don’t know why it keeps failing to mount efivarfs. Grub and the kernel will not try to mount efivarfs if I don’t install grub in UEFI mode, and my BIOS will not load grub if Grub is not installed in UEFI mode (because I’m 100% sure UEFI booting is enabled and Legacy Boot is disabled).

I tried booting with Ubuntu 18.04, reinstall grub using chroot way and even grub-rescue way. Live Media booted in UEFI mode easily. I can confirm you that. I’ve been booting in and out of Live Media, install efivar and efibootmgr and check if I’m on UEFI mode (maybe 20 times already in 3 days  )

IDK if this is a problem, but Archwiki says efivarfs need to be mounted both outside and inside chroot.

Thanks mate, I’ll try this out later. But I think efivarfs is automatically mounted when I boot Live Media on UEFI mode. That’s why we need to use UEFI Live Media to install UEFI mode right? But I’ll try this out when I got home though.

Okay, it didn’t work because efi partition is already mounted in Live session like I mentioned above. Now I can show you guys that I’m on the EFI mode inside the Live session. Also, this time I’m using mhwd-chroot like @petsam mentioned before.

I think I’ve done everything I can, maybe the only way to solve this is by reinstalling? I really hope I can fix this without reinstalling though, I’ve done so much for this install and I don’t want to redo everything :sob:

Is your sdb GPT or MBR?
It may be a rare case

sda and sdb are both GPT

I really hope it wasn’t on GPT once I read your post so I can have a clue on what’s causing the problem

Hey guys, this is a follow up to my previous topic that has been locked after 3 months here: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/sys-firmware-efi-efivars-unknown-filesystem-type-efivars/63637

I found out what’s causing the error message. And that is linux-rt that I’m using.

So last night I decided to test out linux 5.0. And guess what, I found out the error message was not showing on boot. I was on linux-rt (currently linux4.19-rt) all the time. I did a reboot to confirm the error really is gone. After that, I rebooted into linux-rt again and the error is there again. I also installed linux4.19 to confirm that the problem is not being fixed by linux5.0 but caused by linux-rt package and indeed, even on linux4.19 the error message is not showing up. So I can confirm the problem is in linux-rt package only. And I constantly update my linux-rt to the latest version available all this time, so this definitely was there even before linux4.19-rt.

@oberon @philm Maybe you guys can help with this?

Also summon the people who replied to my previous topic @petsam @sueridgepipe

Thanks before.

Yo Budi, I was on a break :upside_down_face: last time and so I did not respond. Maaf, ya?
Anyway, I don’t know anything about rt kernels nor do I know anything about setting up modules into kernels (otherwise I would have put in intel-ucode into our kernels, which I did by simply ‘catting’ intel ucode into it; it works, BTW  )

As you correctly pointed out, it is the rt kernels and not the ‘regular’ kernels that is the problem.

Have you tried setting up ‘efivars’ or ‘modprobe efivars’ as philm pointed out?
You said it should be ‘efivarfs’ instead, but have you tried ‘efivars’?

I was reading up on how intel-ucode was included into the kernels and similarly wouldn’t “CONFIG_EFI_VARS=y” work in the module config?

As said, I really know nothing much about such things (I don’t even know how write a script) but wish you all the best.

ps: you haven’t been around much lately, as the same as many of your old compatriots, either.
Or are all of you on a mass nation wide long break? :upside_down_face: :joy:
Semoga tak ada masalah, ya.

Welcome back, mate! :sunglasses:
Since last night we have linux50-rt available on the unstable branch - maybe it will solve something…?
I can only say that the config of our rt-kernels only differs from our mainline about rt specific settings.
Both mainline and rt have this in the config:

# CONFIG_EFI_VARS is not set

For funs I can try to change that to =y next time I build an rt-kernel.
Strangely I don’t have the issue on both my laptops when I try booting the rt-kernels and they are all UEFI …

For reference, here’s the diff to regular manjaro config:
