Stuck at a blackscreen after restart

Hi @kaiWizardly,

Please provide the output for:

sudo journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=3

For a successful boot right after a failed one. This should give us any errors that occured during the previous boot.

I had to reboot a couple of times before getting to my desktop. So I have tried to provide the output for the last four boots.

sudo journalctl --boot=0 --priority=3

also, there was something about nvidia that I took a picture of.

Even when I am successfully booted, there are a lot of errors, Should I be concerned?

Please be carefull to prevent damage to your filesystem

Gentle shut down a suddenly hanged PC to minimize a chance of getting a broken filesystem and data loss:

I tried that a while back, somehow that did not work for me!

You have to configure it like described when you follow the (red) link to make it possible

:innocent:

Yup, I did all that, but somehow that did not work for me. Maybe I made a mistake somewhere.

Maybe I’m mistaken, I’m not even slightly competent in deciphering stack traces never mind fluent, but I do see USB and/or Bluetooth errors. So maybe they’re related?

Edit:

As I don’t know which branch you’re on, I’m just going to leave this for you:

Maybe it’s related.

It’s pretty weird the errors do not reliably repeat across boots (besides the firmware bug that may not be relevant).

How about booting without graphical login, log in through TTY, then see what startx says?

Do you mean my kernel version? or is it something else?

Not the kernel, the branch.
Though if you don’t know, you likely still are on the stable branch.

Going through the error log, I think the issue is with either Gnome or GDM

Any Suggestions?

I have seen there was a problem introduced for the dash to dock plugin with the update. So not using Gnome, all I can recommend is you disable all plugins from chroot and see if that helps:

gsettings set org.gnome.shell disable-user-extensions true

If it does and you can log back in, enable the plug-ins one-by-one again. But, obviously not dash to dock.

For that error there was another update yesterday, with the fix for it, apparently. So update and try the dance again.

I am not using dash to dock, But I will try out your suggestion anyways.

That’s the spirit! :+1:

startx did not “say” anything, it just took me to the desktop!!

I have successfully removed Linux from the boot menu. I was seeing this intel sgx stuff in the error message, so I figured I should just enable that from the bios. And now I don’t see bootloader or anything.

That would mean the issue is around gdm
I don’t have much clue, besides ensuring your whole system is are up-to-date. Maybe reinstall gdm…?

I have the kernel.sysrq turned on. But somehow it never works for me. My laptop doesn’t have a sysrq key. So I tried the Fn+Alt+PrtScr. Then released the Fn and PrtScr while holding down Alt. And then pressed all the buttons 3 to 5 seconds apart.

What am I doing wrong?

I ran sudo pacman -Syyu first, and then I ran sudo pacman -Syy libgdm-plymouth. That reinstalls the package, right?

I only had the gdm package in mind, but annex ones may be relevant too (i don’t use gdm).
Also, no need to force synchronization (-yy) twice in a row.
