Stuck at 3 dots after app lag fix

Hi

Fresh installation, apps were lagging, so I searched and did this:

sudo pacman -Rdd xdg-desktop-portal-gnome
sudo pacman -S xdg-desktop-portal-gtk

…and now I’m stuck at the 3 dots and the system does not load. When I press ctrl+alt and any of the F keys, the dots just freeze. Pressing esc does nothing. I’ve accessed the system via installation disk to provide this:

How should I proceed?

Thanks

Why do you need either of those on an xfce system? The problem you describe sounds related to a Plymouth issue.

What is going on with the kernel parameters? Noveau (Nvidia), Radeon? I see Intel graphics in your inxi output.

That cannot have affected the boot sequence of your system. The xdg-desktop-portal is simply the backend to the “file open/save” dialog in your desktop environment.

Whatever caused your system to hang must have been something else, and probably something that you did but that you’re not telling us.

Think back. Did you install or remove anything else? Did you change anything with regard to partitions or the system-wide configuration?

Hi, yes, I had to install something to make my broadcom wifi work. I followed instructions here:

I have no idea what’s going on here…

I shut down and restarted several times. On attempt 6, the system loaded.

Shut down, and back to the never ending 3 dots. Shut down, restart, shut down, repeat, and after 4 or 5 attempts it loads again.

Can anyone help?

try with different kernel, for example switch to the 6.1 and / or 5.15 and test with them…

:+1: IF you don’t need 6.4, stay with LTS-kernel (6.1)!

That sounds like a race condition, creating a chicken-and-egg problem. Your system needs something during the boot process — possibly the Broadcom driver — but it’s not available yet when the system tries to appeal unto it, while the rest of the system tries to continue booting, and then grinds to a halt because of the dependency that wasn’t met.

It shouldn’t happen, but unfortunately, it does. under certain circumstances. :frowning_man:

As the others have said, try a different kernel — preferably one of the LTS kernels, i.e. 6.1, 5.15, 5.10, or 4.19.

I pressed shift at boot and tried an older kernel. After doing so, the system would not load - I tried dozens of times and sat staring at the 3 dots each time. Pressing an F button simply froze whatever was happening.

So I did a fresh installation of the image I downloaded from the site in April (because that image worked fine until a recent update). All I did was install and update. The one difference is that I chose propriety drivers, which automatically installed my broadcom wifi, so I did not have to tamper like I did last time.

After the update, the system loaded the first time. I tried again, and it did not load 7 times in a row. It loaded on the eighth time.

There are no other kernels installed to try.

I cannot gamble in this manner each time I want to use my laptop. Please help.

What did you think we were trying to do, then? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I did not imply that anyone’s past replies were not attempts to help.

Having not solved the problem, I need help going forward.

are you on RAID? check with:
inxi -R
and does this happens everytime you start the pc?
are you dual booting with windows? if yes, check if fast startup is disabled…
also check if fast boot is disabled in your bios/uefi - you may not have this option…

when it happens again, provide logs from the failed boot:
journalctl -b-1 -p4 --no-pager
