Steam won't launch from the GNOME launcher, but it does launch from the terminal

I have a problem. I think it’s been going on for about two or three weeks—to be honest, I don’t really remember exactly because I haven’t played in a while—but for the past few days, when I open Steam from the GNOME launcher, it doesn’t work, and the following message appears in the log:

But if I open the console and launch Steam from there, it works just fine:

I’ve searched but can’t find a similar error or anything that might give me a clue on how to fix this problem. I’ve uninstalled and completely cleaned up Steam from my system, then reinstalled it, but the problem persists. I tried using Flatpak, but that caused other errors, and I don’t want any more complications. As I said, everything was working fine a couple of weeks ago—I don’t know at what point or when things changed.

If anyone could help me or give me a clue as to what’s going on, I’d appreciate it. By the way, I’m on the Testing branch, and here are my system specs:

How is the launcher configured to run steam?
How are you launching steam from the terminal?

Looking at both outputs they’re very similar - which line(s) are particularly concerned about?

Presuming your terminal command is steam, what is the output of which steam?

And you’re absolutely right—the third entry is the same as the first one. My mistake—I’ll delete it to avoid further confusion. The first one is the Steam launcher entry from GNOME.

This seems to be a known issue with a bug report: Latest release crashes on Wayland (6.12.74+deb13+1-amd64) · Issue #13160 · ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux · GitHub. You might want to add to it.

One comment on that report state a hard reinstall and reboot resolved the issue.

Another consideration is how you installed Steam. I noticed you have Chaotic-AUR repo’s configured, if it was installed via Chaotic-AUR I’d highly recommend removing it and installing it from the Manjaro repositories pacman -S steam.

Thanks for the reply, but the bug report you mentioned (Issue #13160) is a different issue:

  • My error: ProcessNextMessage: socket disconnected\ → Process terminated (killed)

  • The bug report: Segmentation fault\ → Memory fault

It also differs in:

  • GPU: AMD RX 9060 XT vs. NVIDIA 3090

  • Desktop Environment: GNOME 50.4 vs. KDE Plasma

  • Distribution: Manjaro Testing vs. MX Linux

My issue specifically concerns socket communication, which fails ONLY when I run it from GNOME, not from the terminal. Meanwhile, the bug report describes a segfault that always occurs (even from the terminal).

Well, I have Steam installed from the official repositories (multilib); in chaotic-aur, there aren’t any versions of Steam that replace the official ones.

Correct, but the segfault may not necessarily show on the launcher, and the “socket disconnected” may be the result of a segfault. Is there a segfault or anything in your system log (dmesg and/or journalctl) indicating why?

A program gets specifically killed by the system if it-s doing something fishy : out of memory, security violations etc etc

Does sudo dmesg | grep -i -E "oom|kill|steam" shows anything?

I’ve checked the logs and I don’t see anything obvious, at least not that I can interpret. It used to work fine, but as I said, I hadn’t opened Steam in weeks, so I don’t know what could have caused it to stop working. I’ve never had any problems with Steam before. For now, I’ve enabled the option to run it in a terminal so it can work, but I’d like to understand what’s going on and be able to fix it.

Try this :

systemd-run --user --scope --unit=steamtest /usr/bin/steam - runs steam like gnome but you see the output

This should run the steam.desktop

If the first fails but steam starts from terminal is an environment problem of some sort
If the second fails but, again, it starts from terminal it’s the steam.desktop file
This is the theory as I never had this trouble and had to search through notes and such

In the end, I ended up discussing the problem with an AI, and although it didn’t provide me with a “clean” solution, it did explain the problem to me in simple terms:

The problem was that GNOME Shell was attempting to control Steam within a D-Bus monitoring container (scope). When the client started, Steam’s internal threads (steamwebhelper) did not respond to GNOME’s strict monitoring. Interpreting this as an interface freeze, GNOME Shell sent a forced termination signal (SIGKILL) after two seconds.

The command systemd-run --user --no-block /usr/bin/steam %U fixes this because:

  • systemd-run --user: Instructs the system manager to create an independent user process outside the GNOME Shell container.
  • --no-block: Immediately stops monitoring and waiting for a response from the desktop, detaching the application.

This way, Steam starts up cleanly in the background, just as it does in the terminal, preventing GNOME from interrupting its execution.

According to the AI, this was due to a GNOME update that caused an incompatibility with the Steam bootstrap. But I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere else, or at least I haven’t found any references to it—that’s my big question: was it something on my system, or is it a known bug?

That’s my question. For now, I’ll use the command from the Steam launcher “temporarily”—or so I hope—until an update…

Yes, but the explanation I gave him provided the answer; he reached that conclusion after analyzing various logs and information that you asked me for, as well as a few links where I saw similar issues to see if they were related—including one here on the Manjaro forum, and others from the Arch forum—always looking for the closest match to my issue.

The comparisons I made were between two AIs; I used Gemini and DeepSeek to compare the answers and check whether the arguments were valid.

I reached that point after not finding anything on the specific issue; I did find similar errors, but they varied in terms of specifications like the GPU, etc… The thing is, I’ve been using the same installation since December 2014, when I decided to switch from Ubuntu to Manjaro. This is rather strange for a problem as it isn’t clear who kills steam.sh.

Could be a OOM but I doubt it since you have 32 gigs, although depending on what you are doing 32 gigs can disappear in a blink.

Could be the RDNA driver since you are on 7.2 and the kernel advanced to 7.2.2, but again I doubt it since there is no trouble starting from terminal or directly through gtk-launch

Could be that there are two desktop entries and they are launched simultaneous, which would be the most plausible guess at this point. Since any other way steam starts without hiccups.

There could be some tests to be done but you said you’ll use it through gtk-launch

It-s a wrapper on bpftrace to try to find who sends the kill signal. The usage is simple :
sudo python3 trace-menu-steam.py(you can name it whatever you want) to start the trace > start steam from the menu > the moment following the crash hit enter in the terminal.

Not at all conclusive but this is my fault, I should have anticipated and script for all possible situations. I hoped that a simple trace could give us the culprit. Moreover I’m interested in that
code=128 which is the kernel sending a kill. I’ll get back to you with the updated script

It appears I was chasing my tail. Whilst steamtest.scope is odd I missed that @libertypo asked you to run:

Which directly results in steamtest.scope being created.

I’ll bow out of the discussion for now as @libertypo’s troubleshooting has changed the environment which makes multiple lines of enquiry difficult.
