Steam Games Jumpy....on some installs

I did something kind of weird. I was bouncing between distro’s, and I tried Manjaro. Straight out of the box, I played several Dota2 games, and they played flawlessly.

I then uninstalled Manjaro, tried a few other ones, decided on Manjaro, and re-installed Manjaro. Now nothing on Steam works.

The only difference is the first time, when I installed Manjaro there was this “getting started” prompt that walked me through some settings. The only setting I remember being important (other than color scheme) was Proprietary vs Open-Source Drivers. I chose Proprietary then, and it was excellent.

Well, now I’m running the Hardware Configuration application, and selecting Proprietary Driver, and it’s still terrible. Dota 2 opens in windowed mode, and if I change the resolution to automatic, it fills up the screen but lags so terribly that it’s impossible to play.

I would just re-install and see what I did, but I’ve done a lot of configuration now, and I’m interested in how to fix this. Any obvious answers other than drivers? I’ve tried open source and proprietary, neither work.

Welcome to the forum!

Please post your system info as outlined here:

I tried just reinstalling Manjaro. I don’t know how it’s possible but this time there was no configuration at start. Maybe I’m going crazy. I have tinkered with it and it’s super slow in fullscreen mode no matter how I get there. However, I did play a bit with it in window mode, and it played smoothly. So, normally I would think drivers would fix this, but nothing has worked so far.

nouveau is the open source driver which is no good for gaming. Install the proprietary NVIDIA driver from Manjaro Settings Manager and reboot. inxi will then show nvidia .

Also make sure you’re up to date via Add/Remove Software.

:man_facepalming: I didn’t restart after switching drivers. Thanks…

That solved the issue. I am wondering though. When I installed the first time, I got a setup screen that was really neat that allowed me to customize things very easily. I was wondering if I can run that again. This is not an issue, so feel free to ignore, but I was confused when I didn’t get it on the second install. I understand it’s 100% human error that I didn’t get it. I probably started it somehow. I can’t give more data than it asked me at the start which drivers I wanted to use, and allowed me to change color theme, which changed the color of the desktop folder, and the manjaro image at the bottom left.

That is Manjaro Hello, you can search it in applications or type it in Krunner.
