Steam Doesn't Work

It was working fine until an update, since then every time I run it Steam will just send me back to the user login screen because it restarts the system abruptly for some reason. Anybody facing that problem?

Could you run steam in a terminal and post the output?

no because it won’t give me a chance to copy from the terminal. Right when it shows the verifying installation window the screen turns off and the system is restarted.

Use this:

steam &> ~/steam.log

open the steam.log and copy&paste it here in with code formating

Did you update the nvidia drivers by any chance? If you did have you made sure you have the 32bit lib steam needs? Also try launching steam through lutris see if it launches

Use this:
steam &> ~/steam.log

It launches steam and does the same thing

I have AMD and all m drivers are up to date. Nothing different through Lutris

Update: I found the steam log file and here’s what it has

Judging from what I see it’s a GPU issue

Have you installed?

  • steam-manjaro
  • steam-native
  • linux-steam-integration

Could you also check that you use DRM3?

sudo inxi -Gxxxa

I installed MESA before executing the command, either it doesn’t work or I still need to configure it, and yes everything is installed

It’s different than what I encounter but I installed mesa anyway

This is frustrating. Steam works fine on my laptop, but is very hard to get running on my desktop, both running Manjaro MATE.

Today, after a misbehaving game screwed up my resolution (and does anyone know how to restore it? he asks, parenthetically) and I had to reboot.

I tried starting from the icon 7 times, and 7 times it showed up in htop, and 7 times it disappeared.

Today, I deleted everything in ~/.local/share/Steam except steamapps, started it, it downloaded the package and started, and stopped, yet again.

Trying STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam ended with this:

Have anyone any ideas? Having a gaming computer that won’t run Steam is…frustrating. Steam-native and steam-manjaro are both installed; is THAT it?

sudo pacman -Rns steam-native steam-manjaro
sudo pacman -Syu steam-manjaro

See if it works after that.

I tried Yet Another Time, and, now, it’s running. I’ll try your hint if I need to reboot or anything… :slightly_frowning_face:

I followed the advice, and only had to start Steam twice to get it running, which, believe it or not, is an improvement.

Thanks!

I’ve had a few games do that to me on steam, just cause 3 and doom. I use lutris to launch steam and set the screen resolution with lutris before the game starts and then exit steam on exit game (both are options in lutris). Saves a lot of hassle plus feral gamemode and prime-run can be selected in lutris. Makes my life much easier

Aha! I used to run Steam for Windows under PlayOnLinux. I have Lutris installed, but have used it mostly to play Starcraft II for free. I’ll investigate that.

I tried all of this and also updated steam just now…still not working
it’s something with the graphics driver I can feel it!

I feel your pain, although I’m up and running. What driver/GPU are you using?

Radeon RX 5500 XT
I have mesa and modesetting installed
