Steam crashes regardless of when game is running... sometimes

I realize there are a number of posts like this, but I don’t see this particular one. The steam client keeps crashing on me, but it is not consistent. When it happens, the game usually messes up as well, but I believe it is because steam is crashing, and not the other way around. There have been a couple of times that I played a game and then quit it only to then realize that steam was nolonger open.

I am not getting any notifications or anything. It also does not appear to have anything to do with overheating.

Running manjaro kde, with nvidia 465.31 on kernel 5.12. I also have 5.10 installed, but I have not tested that. I’ll do that next time I restart the machine.

Thanks for any help. As I said, it is not happening all the time, so I am still able to play games for the most part. It probably DOES happen 1-2 times a day, though.

EDIT: it also does not appear to have anything to do with proton. It happens with native and proton.

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. booting into 5.10 LTS is the first thing you should try
  2. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…
  3. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information for us to be able to help you. (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.
  4. A crashlog would be helpful too:
    • Start the game from a terminal and provide the last 35 lines of output
      OR
    • user journalctl and grep to filter the relevant part.

P.S. If you enter a bit more details in your profile, we can also see which Desktop Environment you’re using, which CPU/GPU or Kernel, … you have without typing it every time

Okay, thanks. I also believe from my layman eyes that it is related to this: Steam client crashes after some time if docker is running · Issue #6751 · ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux · GitHub , although I am not aware of any dockers running. I tried #systemctl status docker.service, and it came back as unit docker service could not be found. No idea if that is useful.

I will submit a journalctl the next time it happens. In the meantime, I can confirm that it does not seem to matter which kernel I used (5.10 / 5.12).

Alright, I never got around to submitting a journalctl, but I haven’t had this happen since the recent manjaro update. It’s been a few days, with several hours, so I think I will close this.
