Startling changes after bootup

After booting, I find many changes in my system. It seems that windows have gone back to a default setting - they don’t look the way I set them up. The top bar on all windows is gone. No X (close button), maximize, minimize buttons and the button on the upper left are gone. I cannot move or resize windows.

The panel is gone. There is a blank space where it was. When I use alt F1 to access applications, I cannot type in the search window to find the app I want to open. But I can use the mouse to access the apps.

I tried creating a new panel. It was buggy and didn’t work quite the way it seemed it should and when I rebooted it also disappeared. And after that reboot, the same app appeared on my screen as the first time I booted and all these unwanted changes happened.

I made no changes to the OS before this happened. No updates. I was using an appimage launcher for minecraft that I did not shut down and I left the game running when I shut down the computer before I booted up to all the changes.

Sorry for how vague this post may seem. I’m hoping somebody can help me return to a workable environment.

Start by choosing one of the default themes. Like matcha for example. Seems like your old one is incompatible with xfce 4.20

I chose one of the Matcha themes and there was no change.

I tried opening the window manager and it did not respond.

I can not enter text in a terminal window.
Change that, I opened another terminal window and it accepted text.

I cannot scroll through open windows using alt-tab.

I ran the window manager command - xfwm4 - in a terminal and everything seems to be back to normal. Will see if I have to do this every time I boot up now. ?
