[Stable Update] 2024-01-02 - Kernels, Systemd, Qemu, Plasma-Mobile, Deepin

Did you do the update with Pamac in a running KDE Plasma session?

Yes, but then I re-booted. The strange behavior happened afterwards.

Do have any snapshots so you can revert to one, and re-do the update on tty?

I think I set pamac to keep 2 sets of history. Not sure if that allows me to revert back easily. But so far, I haven’t got a second occurrence of the strange behavior. Will see.

Could you advise what difference of updating from tty can make? I’ve always done it through the pamac gui.

No I meant a Timeshift or Snapper snapshot!

From my experience, I can only advice to do it via tty with Plasma because of its bugs. I love KDE though.
Also Manjaro officially advices you to always do it via tty.
sudo pacman -Syu
flatpak update
And then check pacnews afterwards
pacdiff -s

Reason is, many config files get changed during an update. So it is safer when NOT any program is running.

I had this error when updating:

Manjaro update announcements recommended updating via tty one time on the old forum
(> 5 years ago)
Updating via tty is not needed most of the time
But it is better to update via terminal than using GUI

pamac update --no-aur

or

sudo pacman -Syu

And it is good to be careful that the system does not turn on the screen saver, or try to sleep :warning: or hibernate :see_no_evil: while the update in the terminal/gui is not yet finished.

It’s weird that sleep inhibition has existed for ages by default when media playback is going on, but not when update is running?

I have the opposite experience, i updated via tty in the first few month after i joind Manjaro… then i saw Philms comment somewhere that he recommend using Pamac GUI, because there are some automatic decissions taking which Pamac decided for users…

So i decided to use only pamac from now on, till i saw Aaragon was hardly talking against pamac in a stable update topic, where also was big changes about Audio Codec changes btw.

So i decided to use TTY with pacman again (on my PC) and it was a big fail decission because pacman recomment to use a “fake” default audio codec reset and recomment me to install Ardour package, in the mean time i used pamac on my Laptop that didnt installed this 80MB big (useless) package… but till this day i regret using Pacman and at the end of the day i need to restart my PC anyways… so it didnt matter if i use Pacman because it can replace faster without a PC restart… there are few files that waiting for a reboot anyways.

On the other hand i saw pamac crashing few month ago when i was browsing around and clicking on the Index Pages,
so it “can” be dangerous and when its updating i recommend not to wildly click and play with the GUI while updating

For all unexperienced users, i recommend pamac GUI and to use Timeshift on a External HDD/SSD before doing updates.

pamac gui recommendation = for noobs trying to use manjaro, i don’t understand this user group, wrong distro

pamac cli recommendation = can handle issues better than pacman, better for the non-pro user.

TTY is compatible with pamac cli. But only reason to use TTY, really, is if you decided use shitty software that can break during upgrade. It should never happen. From what i remember, Manjaro has made the TTY recommendation only once in a very long time, and that was when systemd upgrade broke the running session. Hopefully such incompetence won’t happen again.

So you think that Linux Starters never should use Manjaro?

I startet Linux with Manjaro 3years ago and i don’t regret my decision.
Okay i had installed Caldera for 3 weeks on my 486er in the 90th but i don’t gained much experience there.

Its more a question how lazy people are… and if linux noobs want to gain experience, i think its okay to recommend Manjaro as the first distro, it depends on the person if they fit together or not.

I think noob connotation includes more than just being a beginner. It’s more like a beginner that is unable or unwilling to learn.

Update 9-1-2024:
Had another system freeze, needing a hard reset, after resuming from sleep. Up untill the last update never encountered any resume/sleep issues or related crashes on this machine.

There is little info in the logs, no kernel panics or seg faults, but it does show the system being suspended right after resume.

When booted to 6.1 LTS I noticed the main playback audio device was (again) set to my usb DAC, this has been the third time this has occured after a system freeze + reboot.

No, no. I have a big bag full of words for people like that, which I seldom ever share. Noob seems almost Disney, in comparison.

Apart from needing to remove a few outdated AUR packages and remove (then after the update reinstall) KDE connect, no issues so far, apart from my increasingly flaky WiFi card which really needs to be replaced.

You might try the latest and less flaky kernel iterations to compensate.

Good point. I do think it’s hardware but maybe the 6.6 (or whatever) kernels may keep it alive for a bit longer.

It packed up within minutes of this boot, Apparently the only way to get these particular cards up again is by a full reboot. It usually lasts for a few hours at least. I tend to mostly use this machine at home connected to ethernet with the WiFi switched off.

I never see much point in using WiFi at home; yet, some people seem to use it exclusively (laptops and tablets, I imagine). I prefer better bandwidth than WiFi typically allows. I suggested the kernels for the sake of general improvement rather than the recent WiFi fixes.
