If I use nano from the console to edit ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml and set X and Y scale to the default 1.000000 for my second display, and then reboot, I am able to login to my user account. Once I am logged into the XFCE desktop if I attempt to set a custom display scale for my second display using the xfce4-display-settings gui Scale:Custom feature, XORG dumps core and sends me to the LightDM login prompt.

Thank you so much for this. I had exactly the same issue - two monitors and getting an infinite LightDM login loop.

My work around:

• XFCE login (which my partner uses):I’m just going to unplug the second monitor.
• i3 login (which I use): I’ve commented out the xrandr command in my i3 config (which I added to get the second monitor to display in a vertical position). I now have the second monitor back again, but obviously no longer at my preferred orientation.

Really appreciate you posting this - you’ve saved me so much time.
