[Stable Update] 2021-11-19 - Kernels, Gnome 41.1, Plasma 5.23.3, Frameworks 5.88, LxQt 1.0, Xorg-Server 21.1, Mesa

A post was merged into an existing topic: Welcome and introduce yourself - 2021

The update totally broke my display manager -I was able to get into a TTY, but none of the proposed solutions I found did anything at all. I’m now reinstalling -cross your fingers.
On my laptop, it went smooth as silk, though.
Reinstall seems to have worked.

Hello! I seem to be having trouble connecting a controller via Bluetooth since the update. The System Settings show that Bluetooth is disabled and cannot be enabled, but systemctl status bluetooth shows that bluetooth is enabled and running. I’ve looked around but can’t seem to find a solution, any ideas? Thank you!

Edit: Switching to Kernel 5.14.18-1 fixes the Bluetooth problem, I still haven’t found a solution for 5.15.2-2. This does seem to be a bug of some kind related to the kernel but I can’t seem to figure out what specifically

That’s the systemd udev log.
I don’t know what exactly made it appear in this update, but you can hide it by either adding

udev_log=3

to /etc/udev/udev.conf

or by adding

rd.udev.log-priority=3

to your kernel boot parameters.

I had to go in " settings / Keyboard / View and Customize Shortcuts / System and set my shortcut again for “lock screen”. However, it was already set to the same keyboard shortcut as before. It’s now working fine.

After upgrading I can no longer log in. Cinnamon throws me back to the login screen.

$ cat .xsession-errors
[cinnamon-settings-daemon-smartcard] Failed to start: no suitable smartcard driver could be found
[cinnamon-settings-daemon-smartcard] Failed to start: no suitable smartcard driver could be found

is all I could find.
The hardware is

I’ve reinstalled Manjaro from scratch which worked. Also upgrading to the 4.15 kerne still worked.
Applying the updates again breaks everything.
I’m all out of ideas at this point…

Has anyone at least an idea where so search for a solution?

Thanks! It worked for me :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for this tipp.
Downgrade to nvidia driver video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-470xx-prime solves the prime-run problem with minetest and steam.

After a while, in this case webbrowsing on firefox, the whole background desktop turns grey and the only thing i can do is reboot again or logout and login again. Im on a intelnuc8i5beh. I use manjaro gnome.

Kernel 5.15 crashes shortly after plasma starts:

Also noteworthy but not manjaro’s responsability : NVIDIA drivers are not great : lots of tearing and black textures around (wine et native games alike).
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 470.86

Let’s flex
A pity arch will only accept credit-card.
But I’m broke nevertheless, so it will only be a month.
All things aside KDE and Manjaro are assuring at least an income for me (and VS Code, Docker, Vue, Spring Boot, Gitlab, a thousand NPM and Maven library-maintainers and so on).

for me there was no change in behavior.
transparency worked as usual.
weird.

XFCE volume control volume meter is still effd since uberprevious update.

that I reported already here [Stable Update] 2021-09-24 - Kernels, LibreOffice, Browsers, Pipewire, RHVoice, KDE Frameworks, Mesa - #63 by deemon

Having an older Nividia card , my XServer is broken. I am running V470, but currently V490 is installed. The Xorg.log shows: XServer has been shut down.
So nvidia-utils 490 have been installed, can’t downgrade it to 470 (what my mhwd wants) - so the first time in years my manjaro broke - and I haven’t got an idea how to fix it.
Could anyone give me a hint? (I’m writing this from my laptop which is Arch-Linux and not affected).
mwhd has a 470xx entry which I’d like to activate.
Xorg says: Your card is supported by the NVIDIA 470xx legacy drivers - how can I revert to them ?

Did you follow the steps in the update announcement?

Yes.
mwhd -r pci video-nividia leads to:
error: faild to prepare… (could not satisfiy dependencies)::removing nvidia-utils breaks dependencies…
“nvidia-utils” required by “nvidia-system-monitor-git”

And the mwhd -i command failed as well.

Update
I’ve removed that monitor and it worked. Thanks for pointing me to the “update announcement”.

It seems that instructions in files in /etc/modprobe.d are not being honoured any more.

I have a file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist_uas.conf that contains:

options usb-storage quirks=0bc2:ab38:u

to disable the uas module for a backup drive that claims to support it but doesn’t. Formerly I got a message in dmesg that reported that that usb-storage rather than uas was being used for that device. I no longer get that message, and instead get oceans of error messages in dmesg like:

[ 402.388592] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdd] tag#27 uas_eh_abort_handler 0 uas-tag 2 inflight: CMD OUT
[ 402.388610] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdd] tag#27 CDB: Write(16) 8a 00 00 00 00 00 02 00 85 00 00 00 04 00 00 00
[ 402.405216] scsi host7: uas_eh_device_reset_handler start
[ 402.479929] usb 9-1.1: reset SuperSpeed USB device number 4 using xhci_hcd
[ 402.503000] scsi host7: uas_eh_device_reset_handler success

and very slow access. I have reverted to kernel 5.14 to see if that solves it, as before the updates it was behaving properly with 5.14, but to no avail.

Also following a reboot after the backup with rdiff-backup had finally finished (it took about 18 hours) there were many errors that fsck had to attempt to correct (there are now around 5500 files in lost+found on that disk).

Thanks for your elaborate answer. My problem was not the usb (there are no usb drivers installed in mhwd) but an update of the nvidia-utils to 490. The "default “video-nvidia” driver in mhwd rendered my GPU unusable. The trick was -in my case- to remove some obscure tool I only dimly remember I had installed and execute the commands above.

In the git repository, it is mentioned that the tool is deprecated. A link refers to: GitHub - congard/nvidia-system-monitor-qt: Task Manager for Linux for Nvidia graphics cards
