Sound works on 5.4 LTS but not on any other kernel

Hello everybody!

I’m running Manjaro KDE (installed via Architect, if that matters) on a laptop with an i5-10210U. Everything works fine, except the sound. It works on 5.4 LTS but not on any other kernel (it tells me that no output device has been found). I tried googling the problem and I tried all the sound trouble shooting from the Arch wiki, but I can’t find a solution.
Since the sound works on 5.4 it seems like the driver’s there but missing from all other kernels. So is there maybe a module I have to load? (On another machine I had the problem that the DVD drive wasn’t recognized - sudo modprobe sg fixed the problem).

Thx for reading and any help would be appreciated!

PS: the output from inxi -A:
Audio: Device-1: Intel driver: snd_hda_intel
Sound Server: ALSA v: k5.4.78-1-MANJARO

Please provide the output of pa-info and sudo dmesg | egrep -i '(snd|sound|sof|alsa|hda)' on your current working configuration, and on a kernel where it does not work.

Hi there!

Thx for helping!

So you are good for at least another 5 years

Not sure what you mean?

5.4 will be supported until Dec 2025 - 5 years from now.

I used to have sound problem on kernels newer than 5.4xx. In my case my BIOS was very out of date. Updating BIOS solved that problem for me. Might be something to look into.

Lol, yeah, still would prefer if it works on newer kernels.

Thx, but everythings up to date on my machine.

Install sof-firmware and reboot.

That works! Thanks!

But I’m still curious: This seems to be an alternative driver, so a workaround for the problem, right? But why is it that a older kernel supports my hardware and a newer kernel doesn’t? Would maybe make sense for old hardware but my laptop is fairly new, so shouldn’t it be the other way around? No criticism, happy with the solution, just trying to learn since I still consider myself a noob when it comes to Linux.

As far as I know there was a transition from the snd-hda-intel driver to the newer SOF drivers, and those require firmware to fully function.

You can see that the error code is -2, which is ENOENT, which means “No such file or directory”, so the firmware files weren’t installed.

You can see that the presence of digital microphones caused the kernel to try to use the newer SOF driver.

You can still force the kernel to not use the SOF by changing the snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver module parameter.

Thank you, appreciate it!
