Sound stops working some time

Hello,

I recently installed Manjaro on a Thinkpad P14s. I have an issues where audio will no longer play (I can’t head anything out of the speakers) after using the machine for some time. The audio will not come out of the laptop speakers nor the connected HDMI monitor (which I usually use for sound) once the issue starts. I haven’t been able to correlate some event to when the sound stops working.

Below is some information from my machine. Please do let me know what else I can provide to dig into this issue. You will see a dock connected in the information below, the I don’t use it for sound and the HDMI for the monitor is connected directly to the laptop.

What can I do to track down the issue? I’ve read some people talking about auto-mute being an issue, but I’m not really sure how to dig into that or even check if something has been muted (everything looks unmuted in my KDE sound panels).

The output is below. I’ll add that sometimes executing pulseaudio -k fixes the issue.

something is wrong here

sudo pacman -S manjaro-alsa manjaro-pipewire manjaro-gstreamer

Other users have reported similar issues with intermittent audio on kernel v5.15
Updating kernel v6.0 or v6.1 has bee n confirmed to resolves this issue
Audio randomly cutting out on Manjaro KDE
Audio Trouble (Both PipeWire and PulseAudio)

Metapackage manjaro-alsa is included on all Manjaro ISOs. I do not expect that reinstalling this will help resolve ALSA audio issues

Installing manjaro-pipewire to replace PulseAudio will not help with ALSA issues either

Unfortunately my laptop will not boot with either of those kernels. In both cases I get a screen that looks like a bunch of dmesg output and the laptop’s fan runs at full blast. The laptop just hangs indefinitely with this output displayed on the screen.

Maybe worth mentioning again that running pulseaudio -k does seem to fix the issue, but it is pretty annoying to have to execute it 15+ times a day.

Have you tried this?

systemctl --user restart pulseaudio.service

Wouldn’t I be doing that just as often as pulseaudio -k since rebooting seems to make no meaningful change to the problem?

So you have nvidia GPU, you need to add
ibt=off
to the grub boot line in kernel 6.0 onwards.
So, you’ll have both sound and will boot and work perfectly (I’m also on Tiger-lake and hybrid nvidia, as you, so I can confirm that’s a working solution).

The ibt=off flagged got me booted with the 6.1 kernel. Thanks!

Sound seems fine for now but since it’s been an intermittent problem I’ll report back in after a day or so to confirm that the problem hasn’t surfaced again.

Upgrading the kernel did the trick. I think we can say this is solved. It’s been half a day and I’ve had no issues so far.

Importantly though I did need to add ibt=off to my kernel options in GRUB before I could get the machine to boot with kernel 6.1.

Thanks everyone!

Kernel option ibt=off is needed for users with latest nVidia drivers
My system is using legacy drivers (v470) and did not need kernel option for kernel v6.1

I’m having the same problem, however I have Kernel 6.1. I get sound when I boot up, but sometime, usually overnight, it loses the sound card.
