Sound stops working randomly until application restart

Good luck, because you’ll need it as Creative Labs Linux support is non-existant and if something does work, it’s because some poor dev somewhere reverse-engineered everything and implemented it for him/herself…

:scream:

I think part of the problem may be here

In this other topic the nikgnomic shows what to choose when it comes to pulseaudio and pipewire together, and shows the alternative solution

Good luck!

@Fabby I know and my highest respect toward the dev who put his freetime into that project. The problem is, that there are nearly no “modern” alternatives. Anyway, I am really thankful, that somebody made it possible to even use this soundcard.

@Creto Intersting. Tried it for a couple of days but no difference.

My biggest problem is, that I don’t know any logs etc. that could help to at least understand why this behavior exists. As I said: Pulse and Alsa are saying, that the audiostream is running fine.

Hi @Alien1

If you have read the topic I indicated above, you must have realized that the @nikgnomic recommends that you either use pulseaudio or pipewire, never both together

T+ = See you later

ALSA support for Soundblaster AE-5 Plus was added to kernel recently
Soundblaster Creative AE-5 Plus: No sound
/source/sound/pci/hda/patch_ca0132 has also been backported to earlier kernel versions
But the card is not fully supported in PulseAudio or Pipewire

I suggest you check PulseAudio socket and service

systemctl --user status pulseaudio.*

If there is an error message: GetManagedObjects() failed that would suggest Pipewire has taken control of audio device away from PulseAudio

@Creto Thats why I disabled pipewire

@nikgnomic I just provoked the audio to stop working by using spotify. The following output ist given shortly after audio stopped working:

pulseaudio:

Any suggestions where I could find the cause of this problem?
I mean in my understanding, if it’s a problem with Pulse, Alsa or the driver, then there must be a logfile or any way to debug it

Update:
since I’m a bit lost with this, I tried a different distro with a different Desktop-Environment: MX-Linux (based on Debian) with XFCE. Same Problem.
So I can cross Manjaro itself and KDE off the list.
That still leaves me with 3 possibilities I’m not able to troubleshoot:

  • Kerneldriver
  • Pulse
  • Alsa

In my understanding, the driver at least doesn’t crash completely, since there isn’t anything in journalctl.
Anyway. I will keep you up to date. Maybe there are 3 or 4 people on earth with the same problem

Hi! I have Ryzen 3900, nVidia 2070S, Soundblaster Creative AE-5 Plus (DAMNED)
Manjaro 21 xfce x64.
NO SOUND!
Alsamixer, Pulseuadio, Qastools recognize the card periodically. Rebooting doesn’t help regularly, only from time to time. In this case, the sound may or may not appear. Kernels 5.12 / 5.13 / 5.14.
Help, please. Thanks.

Problem solved in arch. The solution is in the Russian forum.

It turned out that I had purchased a sound card with the plus prefix, which was not in the list of kernel devices.

this commit ALSA: hda/ca0132: Add Sound BlasterX AE-5 Plus support - kernel/git/tiwai/sound.git - Sound sub-system tree allowed the system to correctly recognize the sound card
[9.847753] snd_hda_codec_ca0132 hdaudioC1D1: autoconfig for Sound BlasterX AE-5: line_outs = 3 (0xb / 0xf / 0x10 / 0x0 / 0x0)
type: line
, so now the sound appears and works.

How do I apply this solution in Manjaro? Thanks.

This is in kernel 5.11/5.12/5.13/5.14 - why doesn’t works?

It’s my config.

Hi @urgentus ,
I think it would be easier to summarize everything in one post.
Yes, this is a similar problem. Had the same behavior before, but after a BIOS update it went to the problem I described.
Apparently there is a general problem with x570 and different soundcards. Just take a look on the Amazon-reviews of for example the Asus Xonar SE.

Are you on the newest BIOS version for your MB?

Another thing you can try: when the soundcard is “not detected”, can you spot it in pacmd list with the correct profile selected?

Btw. my next step is to test my SoundBlaster AE in a intel setup. Maybe we can pinpoint the problem futher.

No.

I have b550 mobo.

AE-5 plus is working now, but only 2.0 .
rm ~/.config/pulse/* => reboot => tune with alsamixer

Thanks for help. Good luck.
PS I think to clean install OS

Update that first.

Your first port of call should be the LTS kernels: 5.10 and 5.4.

:crossed_fingers:

I tried 5.10 first - unsuccessfully.

Update latest BIOS - No changed.

@Fabby As mentioned before: SoundBlaster AE series is supported since Kernel 5.10. 5.4 will not work.

@urgentus Congrats to get it working :slightly_smiling_face:
The 2.0 Channel thing should be fairly easy: you have to set the correct profile via pacmd.
First find your card with pacmd list. Then set the desired Profile. For example:
pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_0f_00.4 output:analog-surround-51'

I’m wondering if you will have the same problem as me. Now that it’s working, let’s try to break it :joy:
Can you try to listen to spotify or any other fairly high bitrate audio for around an hour (youtube will not trigger the problem I have) and tell me, if the audio stops working?

b550 and x570 are quiet similar. So there is a good chance that there will be similar difficulties with soundcards (if the chipset is the culprit).

I hope. I also have an asus rog crosshair hero VI (x370), but I’m too lazy to rebuild the PC

Diagram 5.1 works, but the left channel is weaker than the right. I aligned with qasmixer, but it’s a crutch.

Thanks for help & advice.
